Replacing Rear-Axle Bearing (Front)

  • Risk of squashing or bruising 

    → Do not reach into the danger area.

    → Relieve tension on components before starting work.

    → Secure components to prevent them from loosening suddenly.

CAUTION: Heavy components 
  • Risk of squashing 

    → Wear personal protective gear.

    → Get someone to help if necessary.

The following tools are required for replacing the front bearing:

The procedure for removing and installing is described for one side as an example. The procedure for the other side is practically identical.

  1. VAS 6931 - Transmission and Engine Jack  must be positioned under the rear axle housing -1-  with a suitable piece of wood -2-  underneath.

  2. Unscrew screw -1-  .

  3. Screw in screw -1-  on the opposite side of the bearing to be replaced into the body with a gap -a-  of 4 cm.

  4. Lower the rear axle housing.
  5. Lever off twist lock -1-  close to the retaining lugs alternately on both sides of the bearing using a screwdriver.

  6. Mark installation position of the bearing with respect to the rear axle housing -Arrows-  .

    Information 

    The help of another person is required to hold the tool.

  7. Fit tools and press bearing out of rear axle housing -3-  .

    1 T10263/5  Nut
    2 T40185/5  Pressure piece (cut-out facing the bearing)
    3 Rear axle housing
    4 T40185/6  Support ring (conical side facing upwards, bars engaged in cut-outs on the bearing)
    5 T40033/3  Pipe
    6 T40033/4  Pressure piece
    7 VAS 6178  Hydraulic cylinder
    8 T10263/5  Nut
    9 T10263/4  Spindle (pin facing downwards)
  8. Align new  bearing with the markings on the rear axle housing and fit it.
  9. Align pressure piece T40185/3  with bearing > Pressure piece T40185/3  .

  10. Fit tools and press bearing -4-  into rear axle housing -3-  until the collar is touching the socket of the rear axle housing without a gap.

    2 T40185/4  Pressure piece
    3 Rear axle housing
    4 Bearing
    5 T40185/3  Pressure piece
    6 VAS 6178  Hydraulic cylinder

    8 T10263/4  Spindle (pin facing downwards)
  11. Align twist lock -1-  with the bearing transversely with respect to direction of travel -arrow-  and attach it.

  12. Fit and tighten screw -1-  .

    > Initial tightening 115 Nm 

    > Final tightening + 90°

  13. > VAS 6931 - Transmission and Engine Jack  must now be removed.
