Remove Engine

WARNING: Danger of objects or loads falling down 
  • Risk of squashing or crushing 
    1. → Secure components to prevent them from falling down.
WARNING: Highly inflammable or explosive materials 
  • Danger of fire or explosion 
    1. → Avoid contact with hot parts or sources of ignition.
    2. → Use suction to remove ignitable vapours.
    3. → Attach warning sign in a clearly visible position.
    4. → Contain leaked media using non-flammable absorbent material and put it in a container designed for this purpose for disposal in accordance with local requirements.
    5. → Secure collection containers/vessels to prevent them from tipping over.
WARNING: Hot fuel and hot fuel lines. 
  • Danger of scalding 
    1. → Allow the fuel to cool down before opening line connections.
    2. → Wear protective gloves.
    3. → Wear protective goggles.
WARNING: Damaged fuel lines 
  • Escaping fuel in the engine compartment 
  • Fire in the engine compartment 
    1. → Do not loosen hoses using sharp-edged tools.
    2. → Replace damaged fuel lines.
WARNING: Caustic fluids 
  • Danger of chemical burns 
    1. → Wear personal protective gear.
    2. → Ensure that there is good ventilation.
    3. → Avoid contact with caustic fluid.
    4. → If you do come into contact, wash off immediately with plenty of warm water and contact a doctor if necessary.
CAUTION: Hot components 
  • Risk of burns 
    1. → Let hot components cool down.
    2. → Wear personal protective gear.

  1. Disconnect supply line -1-  and active carbon filter line -2-  .

Connection point in engine compartment - supply line

  1. 1.1  Disconnect supply line -1-  at connection point in engine compartment.
    1. 1.1.1  Release and disconnect quick connector -3-  for engine compartment section at the underbody section.
    2. 1.1.2  Soak up escaping fuel using suitable aids and close off line connections using suitable stoppers.
  2. 1.2  Disconnect active carbon filter line -2-  .
    1. 1.2.1  Loosen spring band clamp -4-  using > VAS 6890 - spring band clamps pliers  .
    2. 1.2.2  Disconnect active carbon filter line -2-  and close off line connections using suitable stoppers.
  3. Disconnect coolant hoses -1 and 2-  .

    1. 2.1  Release and disconnect quick connector -3-  for the coolant hose -1-  .
    2. 2.2  Loosen spring band clamp -4-  using > VAS 6890 - spring band clamps pliers  .
    3. 2.3  Pull off coolant hose -2-  .
    4. 2.4  Catch escaping coolant and close off line connections using suitable stoppers.
  4. Disconnect coolant hose -1-  at the top of the radiator -3-  .

    1. 3.1  Release safety clip -2-  .
    2. 3.2  Disconnect coolant hose -1-  from the radiator -3-  .
    3. 3.3  Catch escaping coolant and close off line connections using suitable stoppers.
  5. Disconnect coolant vent line -1-  .

    1. 4.1  Release and disconnect quick connector -2-  .
    2. 4.2  Catch escaping coolant and close off line connections using suitable stoppers.
  6. Remove DME control unit holder -1-  .

    1. 5.1  Unclip coolant line -2-  from clips -3-  .
    2. 5.2  Disengage cable plug -4-  and unclip clip -5-  on the electric line.
    3. 5.3  Unclip clips on wiring harness
    4. 5.4  Unscrew screw on DME control unit holder -7-  .
    5. 5.5  Unscrew nut on DME control unit holder -8-  .
    6. 5.6  Disengage and remove DME control unit holder -1-  . Remove cover on fuse box -1-  .

    1. 6.1  Unscrew screws -2-  and remove cover on fuse box -1-  .
  7. Disconnect relay carrier -1-  from fuse box.

    1. 7.1  Release and disconnect cable plug -2-  .
    2. 7.2  Screw off nut -3-  .
    3. 7.3  Press locking lugs -4-  and remove relay carrier -1-  by pulling it upwards.
  8. Remove B+ cover -1-  .

  9. Disconnect B+ lines -1-  next to the fuse box.

    1. 9.1  Unscrew positive terminal -2-  .
    2. 9.2  Unscrew nuts -3-  .
    3. 9.3  Disconnect B+ lines -1-  from the distributor.
  10. Disconnect ground lines -1-  next to the fuse box.
    1. 10.1  Screw off nut -2-  .
    2. 10.2  Unclip ground lines -1-  from bracket -3-  .

  11. Disconnect wiring harness on right engine mount -1-  .

    1. 11.1  Unclip clips -2 and 3-  .
    2. 11.2  Release and disconnect cable plug -4 and 5-  .
    3. 11.3  Move wiring harness on right engine mount -1-  aside.
  12. Disconnect cable plug -1 to 3-  .

    1. 12.1  Disengage cable plug -1 to 3-  from the holder and release and disconnect it.
    2. 12.2  Unclip clips on the electric lines.
  13. Disconnect wiring harness in plenum panel -1-  .

    1. 13.1  Unclip coolant line -2-  from clip -5-  .
    2. 13.2  Unclip clips -3-  .
    3. 13.3  Release and disconnect cable plug -4-  .
    4. 13.4  Move wiring harness in plenum panel -1-  aside.
  14. Disconnect wiring harness -1-  on left longitudinal member.

    1. 14.1  Disengage cable plug -2-  from the holder and release and disconnect it.
    2. 14.2 Unclip clips on wiring harness -3-  .
    3. 14.3  Move wiring harness -1-  aside.
  15. Disconnect engine wire harness -1-  from the body.

    1. 15.1  Open line bracket -2-  and unclip clips -3-  .
    2. 15.2  Carefully place all sections of the disconnected engine wire harness -1-  including the relay carrier down on the engine.
  16. Disconnect wiring harness -1-  on left longitudinal member.

    1. 16.1  Unclip clips -2-  .
    2. 16.2  Release and disconnect cable plug on pressure sensor -3-  .
    3. 16.3  Release and disconnect cable plug on air-conditioning compressor -4-  .
    4. 16.4  Release and disconnect cable plug on left engine mount -5-  .
    5. 16.5  Move wiring harness -1-  aside.
  17. Disconnect wiring harness on left dome -1-  .

    1. 17.1  Unclip clips -2-  .

    Strut

    1. 18.1  Unscrew screw for strut -2-  .
    2. 18.2  Unscrew nut on strut -3-  .
    3. 18.3  Guide threaded bolt of strut -1-  out of the front-axle carrier and remove strut -1-  .
  19. Open locking lug -1-  with a screwdriver, open housing cover -2-  on the right longitudinal member and remove it.

  20. Disconnect electric lines on the right longitudinal member.

    1. 20.1  Unclip clip -7-  and move headlight vent line -8-  aside.
    2. 20.2  Unscrew nut -2-  and move ground lines -2 and 4-  aside.
    3. 20.3  Release and disconnect cable plug -5-  and loosen it from the holder.
    4. 20.4  Unscrew nut -4-,  remove ground line -2-  and set it aside.
  21. Press in locking lugs -1-,  pull off ground line -2-  in -direction of arrow-  and guide it down towards the engine.

  22. Loosen tie-wrap -1-  .

    1. 23.1  Release and disconnect cable plugs on level sensors -2-  .
    2. 23.2  Release and disconnect cable plug on brake pad wear indicator -3-  .
    3. 23.3  Release and disconnect cable plug on rpm sensor -4-  .
    4. 23.4  Detach rubber holder -5-  .
    5. 23.5  Screw off nut -6-  .
    6. 23.6  Unclip clips -7-  .
    7. 23.7  Move electric wire harness in wheel housing -1-  aside.
  24. Disconnect lines -1 and 2-  from engine mount bracket.

    1. 24.1  Loosen tie-wrap -3-  .
    2. 24.2  Screw off nut -4-  .
    3. 24.3  Guide ground line -2-  towards the right wheel housing.
  25. Disconnect lower coolant hose -1-  from radiator -2-  .

    1. 25.1  Release safety clip -3-  .
    2. 25.2  Pull off lower coolant hose -1-  .
    3. 25.3  Catch escaping coolant and close off line connections using suitable stoppers.
  26. Only if the power-steering gear was not already removed: 

    Release and disconnect cable plug on power-steering gear -1-  .

  27. Only if the power-steering gear was not already removed: 

    Disconnect universal joint for steering column -1-  from the power-steering gear -2-  .

    1. 27.1  Unscrew screw on universal joint for steering column -3-  .
      1. 27.1.1  Replace screw.
    2. 27.2  Disconnect universal joint for steering column -1-  from the power-steering gear -2-  in -direction of arrow-  .
  28. Disconnect electric wire harness for transmission -1-  .

    1. 28.1  Release and disconnect cable plug -2 and 3-  .
    2. 28.2  Unclip clips -4-  .
  29. Loosen upper trailing arm -1 and 2-  from wheel bearing housing -5-  .

    1. 29.1  Unscrew nut -4-  and counter at the clamping screw on the wheel bearing housing -3-  at the same time.
      1. 29.1.1  Replace nut and screw.
    2. 29.2  Pull upper trailing arms -1 and 2-  out of the wheel bearing housing -5-  .
    3. 29.3  Secure the wheel bearing housing -5-  until the elevating platform is fitted to prevent it from tilting sideways.
  30. Disconnect spring strut forks

    1. 30.1  Unscrew nut on spring strut fork -2-  and counter at the screw -3-  at the same time.
      1. 30.1.1  Replace nut.
    2. 30.2  Remove screw -3-  .
      1. 30.2.1  Replace screw.
    3. 30.3  > 3424 - Spreader  must be inserted into the clamp on the spring strut forks -1-  and turned by 90°.
  31. > VAS 6832 - Master Gear unit elevating platform  with > VAS 6832/5 - assembly device - Macan-1 to 8-  must now be fitted.

    Mounting points

  32. 31.1  Secure wheel hub support hand-tight with wheel bolt -5-  .

    Information 

    You will need a second mechanic to help you with this step.

  33. Remove engine -1-  .

    Bolts

    1. 32.1  Mark the position of the front-axle carrier and transmission support on the body using a water-resistant felt-tip pen.
    2. 32.2  Unscrew screws on front-axle carrier -2 to 9-  .
    3. 32.2.1  Replace screws.
    4. 32.3  Unscrew screws on transmission support -10-  .
    5. 32.4  Carefully lower the engine -1-  on > VAS 6832 - Master Gear unit elevating platform  . Make sure that no lines or other components are trapped or damaged.
