Adjusting Front-Axle Toe

1. Remove front brake disc air guide.

   > WM, 461619 REMOVING AND INSTALLING AIR GUIDE FOR BRAKE DISC - section on "Removing".

2. Check whether the steering wheel is displaced with respect to the steering gear.
   1. 2.1 Move steering gear to center position.
   2. 2.2 Turn wheels to straight-ahead position.
   3. 2.3 Then, adjust the front wheel alignment if necessary until the center position marking -1-  is aligned with the arrow.

      If the front underbody panelling is fitted, the position of the center position marking can be checked using a mirror.

   4. 2.4 Re-position the steering wheel if necessary. When re-positioning the steering wheel, try to find the best position.
3. Clamp steering wheel in center position with steering wheel holder -LHD vehicle -  . Use only steering wheel holders that do not project into the area of the airbag unit -RHD vehicle -  . If necessary, shorten guide rod of steering wheel holder at top -Arrow-  .

   For fast and reliable steering wheel alignment in center position, use a > VAS 6826 - steering wheel scales  (with integrated angle measurement box).

4. With the steering wheel in center position, adjust the toe at the relevant tie rod.

Adjusting front-axle toe

1. 4.1 Loosen lock nut -2-  . To do this, counter at the tie-rod ball -3-  using a suitable open-ended wrench.
2. 4.2 With the steering wheel in center position, adjust the toe at the hexagon -1-  on the tie rod(s) using a suitable open-ended wrench.
3. 4.3 Tighten lock nut to > Tightening torque 50 N.m (37 ft lb.)  .
4. 4.4 To loosen and tighten the lock nut, use > 9730 - socket-wrench insert-LHD vehicle -  together with a torque wrench -RHD vehicle -  .

The tightening torque for the lock nut when using > 9730 - socket-wrench insert-LHD vehicle -  corresponds to a value of approx. 32.5 N.m (24 ft lb.)  on the torque wrench.
