Installing Flywheel

WARNING: Danger of objects or loads falling down
  • Risk of squashing or crushing

→ Secure components to prevent them from falling down.

WARNING: Caustic fluids
  • Danger of chemical burns

    → Wear personal protective gear.

→ Ensure that there is good ventilation.

→ Avoid contact with caustic fluid.

→ If you do come into contact, wash off immediately with plenty of warm water and contact a doctor if necessary.

Information

The flywheel shown in the illustrations below comes from a vehicle with manual transmission. The procedure for vehicles with a double clutch transmission is identical.

  1. Clean the friction surface of the flywheel using a clean, lint-free cloth soaked in acetone or solvent naphtha.

    Information

Before re-installing the flywheel, clean the friction surface of the flywheel using a clean, lint-free cloth soaked in acetone or solvent naphtha).

    Information

    • Check the diaphragm spring on the flywheel for mechanical damage before installing it.
    • A damaged flywheel must not be installed!
  2. Install flywheel.
    1. 2.1  Check that the dowel pin is inserted on the crankshaft.
    2. 2.2  Fit flywheel on the crankshaft. Make sure that the dowel pin engages in the relevant cut-out on the flywheel.
    3. 2.3  Fit ten new fastening screws and tighten evenly in diagonally opposite sequence.
    4. 2.4  > 9538/1 - Toothed segment-1-  must be fitted on the engine flange as a counter-hold tool.

      Counter-hold tool (similar to illustration)

      Information

A commercially available socket, for example, is ideal as a spacer.

      1. 2.4.1  > 9538/1 - Toothed segment-1-  must be fitted on the engine flange using original flange screw -3-  , > 9538/2 - holder-2-  and spacer -4-  .
    5. 2.5  Tighten screws -2-  in diagonally opposite sequence.

      > Initial tightening 25 N.m (19 ft lb.)

      > Final tightening torque angle + 120°

      Flywheel

    Information

    • After removing, installing or replacing the flywheel, perform the "Reset sensor wheel (flywheel) adaptation" function using the PIWIS Tester.
    • To actively teach the adaptation, perform an adaptation drive together with another person.
  3. If a flywheel was removed and installed or replaced:
    1. 3.1 PIWIS Tester  must be connected to the vehicle.
    2. 3.2  Switch on ignition and Tester.
    3. 3.3  Start the diagnostic software.
    4. 3.4  Select "Engine electronics (DME)"  control unit.
    5. 3.5  Select the "Maintenance/repairs"  tab.
    6. 3.6  Select the "Delete adaptation"  procedure.
    7. 3.7  Select the "Reset sensor wheel (flywheel) adaptation"  procedure.
    8. 3.8  Follow the instructions on the PIWIS Tester.
  4. Perform adaptation drive.

    Conditions/procedure for the adaptation drive:

    1. 4.1 PIWIS Tester  must be connected to the vehicle.
    2. 4.2  Switch on ignition and Tester.
    3. 4.3  Start the diagnostic software.
    4. 4.4  Select "Engine electronics (DME)"  control unit.
    5. 4.5  Select the "Actual values/input signals"  tab.
    6. 4.6  Select the "M_Misfiring"  group.
    7. 4.7  Select the actual value "M090_Sensor wheel adaptation (1 = complete)".
    8. 4.8  Get a second person to check the PIWIS Tester  while you are driving.
    9. 4.9  Perform adaptation drive until "1"  is displayed in the M090 actual value → Adaptation is complete.
      1. 4.9.1  Vehicle speed → approx. 50 km/h (30 mph).
      2. 4.9.2  Engine speed → 1, 500 and 2, 500 rpm.
      3. 4.9.3  Generate a minimal load → Slight acceleration or slight uphill ascent.
