Removing Pistons - Cylinders 4-6
- Secure the crankshaft to the main bearing in the middle using > P90028 - holding bridge-1- .
- Mark installation position of the pistons -4 to 6-
with a touch-up stick.
Pistons 4 to 6
- Turn crankshaft into position.
Crankshaft (without vibration damper)
- 3.1 Screw in screws -2- by hand.
- 3.2 Fit > 9773 - turning device-1- and turn the crankshaft so that the screws for the connecting-rod bearing caps are accessible.
- Remove piston 4 and connecting rod.
Connecting rod cap screws
- 4.1 Unscrew screws on connecting-rod bearing cap -1- .
- 4.2 Remove connecting-rod bearing cap -2- and bearing shell.
- 4.3 Unscrew handle of the > 9783 - assembly aid-2- and screw the bar into a threaded bore on the connecting rod -1- .

Press piston 4 with connecting rod down out of the cylinder bore.

- 4.5 Store the piston together with the connecting-rod bearing cap and bearing shell so that they cannot get mixed up.
- 4.6 Repeat these steps for pistons 5 and 6.
- Unscrew screws -2-
and remove connecting rod cap and connecting rods -1-
for cylinders 1 to 3.

- Remove crankshaft sealing rings on the transmission and belt side.

- Remove > 9773 - turning device-1-
and unscrew screws -2-

Turning crankshaft (without vibration damper)
- Remove crankshaft with timing chains from crankcase half for cylinder bank 2. > Crankshaft with timing chains in crankcase half for cylinder bank 2

- 8.1 Remove bearing shells from crankcase halves and dispose of them.
- 8.2 Remove O-ring from crankcase half for cylinder bank 2 and dispose of it.
- 8.3 Clean the crankcase and sealing faces.

If pistons or connecting rods have to be replaced:
- Insert connecting rod -1-
with piston into > 9778 - retaining device-2-
(can be used for pistons with a diameter of 102 mm).

- 9.1 Remove piston-pin circlip using > 9764 - disassembly tool .
- 9.2 Press out piston pin and place it with the relevant piston to avoid confusion.
- If pistons have to be re-installed:
Check pistons for wear.
