Disassembling Engine

WARNING: Danger of objects or loads falling down 
  • Risk of squashing or crushing 

    → Secure components to prevent them from falling down.

CAUTION: Heavy components 
  • Risk of squashing 

    → Wear personal protective gear.

    → Get someone to help if necessary.

  1. Remove engine carrier (bracket).

    > 103019 REMOVING AND INSTALLING ENGINE CARRIER (BRACKET) 

  2. Unscrew spacer bolt on engine carrier (bracket) -1-  .

  3. Remove drive belt.

    > 137819 REMOVING AND INSTALLING DRIVE BELT

  4. Remove positive crankcase ventilation line.

    > 105219 REMOVING AND INSTALLING POSITIVE CRANKCASE VENTILATION LINE 

  5. Remove oil separator.

    > 105519 REMOVING AND INSTALLING OIL SEPARATOR 

  6. Remove air-conditioning compressor.

    > 873419 REMOVING AND INSTALLING AIR CONDITIONING COMPRESSOR

  7. Remove bracket with deflection roller.

    > 137719 REMOVING AND INSTALLING CONSOLE WITH DEFLECTION ROLLER

  8. Remove generator.

    > 272219 REMOVING AND INSTALLING GENERATOR

  9. Remove belt tensioner.

    > 137319 REMOVING AND INSTALLING BELT TENSIONER

  10. Remove directional-control valve for thermal management.

    > 196819 REMOVING AND INSTALLING DIRECTIONAL-CONTROL VALVE FOR THERMAL MANAGEMENT

  11. Remove coolant distributor housing.

    > 195919 REMOVING AND INSTALLING COOLANT DISTRIBUTOR HOUSING

  12. Remove coolant regulator housing.

    > 195519 REMOVING AND INSTALLING COOLANT REGULATOR HOUSING

  13. Remove coolant guide -1-  .
    1. 13.1  Unscrew screws -2 and 3-  and remove coolant guide -1-  .
    2. 13.2  Collect emerging coolant.

  14. Remove coolant pump housing -1-  .
    1. 14.1  Disconnect control line -2-  from coolant pump housing -1-  .
    2. 14.2  Unscrew and remove screws -3-  .
    3. 14.3  Pull coolant pump housing -1-  off coolant pipe -4-  and cylinder head housing -5-  and remove it.
    4. 14.4  Collect emerging coolant.

  15. Remove oxygen sensors upstream of catalytic converter.

  16. Remove oxygen sensors downstream of catalytic converter.

    > 247319 REMOVING AND INSTALLING OXYGEN SENSOR DOWNSTREAM OF CATALYTIC CONVERTER

  17. Remove exhaust manifolds with catalytic converter.

    > 261019 REMOVING AND INSTALLING EXHAUST MANIFOLD WITH CATALYTIC CONVERTER

  18. Remove heat shields (on catalytic converter/particle filter).

    > 261219 REMOVING AND INSTALLING HEAT SHIELD (ON CATALYTIC CONVERTER/PARTICLE FILTER)

  19. Remove engine wire harness.

    > 975219 REMOVING AND INSTALLING WIRE HARNESS FOR ENGINE

  20. Remove coolant intake pipe -1-  and coolant return pipe -2-  .
    1. 20.1  Unscrew and remove screws -4-  .
    2. 20.2  Disconnect coolant intake pipe -1-  and coolant return pipe -2-  from collection pipe for transmission cooling -3-  .
    3. 20.3  Collect emerging coolant.

  21. Remove collection pipe for transmission cooling -1-  .
    1. 21.1  Loosen spring band clamps -3-  using > VAS 6890 - spring band clamps pliers  .
    2. 21.2  Disconnect coolant hoses -4 and 5-  from oil/water heat exchanger -2-  .
    3. 21.3  Unclip coolant hose -4-  from holder -7-  .
    4. 21.4  Unscrew screw on holder -8-  .
    5. 21.5  Unscrew screws on collection pipe for transmission cooling -9-  .
    6. 21.6  Remove collection pipe for transmission cooling -1-  together with coolant hoses -4 to 6-  .
    7. 21.7  Collect emerging coolant.

  22. Remove oil filler neck -1-  .
    1. 22.1  Unscrew and remove screws -2-  .
    2. 22.2  Unscrew screw on oil feed pipe holder -3-  .
    3. 22.3  Remove oil filler neck -1-  .

  23. Unscrew screw on vacuum line holder -2-  and remove vacuum line -1-  .

  24. Remove tank vent line -1-  .
    1. 24.1  Unscrew screw on holder -2-  .
    2. 24.2  Unclip clip -3-  and remove tank vent valve -1-  .

  25. Unclip clip -2-  and remove coolant vent line -1-  .

  26. Remove fuel line on cylinder bank 2 -1-  .
    1. 26.1  Unscrew screw on fuel line holder -2-  .
    2. 26.2  Unscrew union nut on high-pressure pump -3-  .
    3. 26.3  Unscrew union nut on fuel distributor pipe -4-  .
    4. 26.4  Remove fuel line -1-  with pressure sensor -5-  .

  27. Remove fuel line on cylinder bank 1 -1-  .
    1. 27.1  Unscrew screw on fuel line holder -2-  .
    2. 27.2  Unscrew fuel line screw -3-  .
    3. 27.3  Unscrew union nut on high-pressure pump -4-  .
    4. 27.4  Unscrew union nut on fuel distributor pipe -5-  .
    5. 27.5  Remove fuel line -1-  with pressure sensor -6-  .

  28. Remove fuel supply line (engine) -1-  .
    1. 28.1  Unscrew screws on holder for fuel supply line (engine) -2-  .
    2. 28.2  Unscrew union nuts -3-  .
    3. 28.3  Unclip fuel supply line (engine) -1-  from holders -4-  .
    4. 28.4  Remove fuel supply line (engine) -1-  .

  29. Remove high-pressure pumps.

    > 246319 REMOVING AND INSTALLING HIGH-PRESSURE PUMP

  30. Remove oil filter housing -1-  .
    1. 30.1  Unscrew and remove screws -2-  .
    2. 30.2  Remove oil-filter housing -1-  .
    3. 30.3  Catch emerging oil and coolant.

  31. Remove oil line for cylinder bank 2 -1-  .
    1. 31.1  Unscrew and remove screws -2-  .
    2. 31.2  Remove oil line for cylinder bank 2 -1-  .
    3. 31.3  Collect emerging oil.

  32. Unscrew screws -2-  and remove starter -1-  .

  33. Remove knock sensors.

  34. Remove hall sender.

  35. Remove fuel collection pipes (with fuel injectors).

    > 243019 REMOVING AND INSTALLING FUEL COLLECTION PIPE (WITH FUEL INJECTORS)

  36. Remove ignition coils.

    > 282020 REMOVING AND INSTALLING IGNITION COILS

  37. Remove spark plugs.

    > 287020 REMOVING AND INSTALLING SPARK PLUGS

  38. Remove actuator for camshaft control.

    > 153919 REMOVING AND INSTALLING ACTUATOR FOR CAMSHAFT CONTROL

  39. Remove the cylinder head cover.

    > 158219 REMOVE AND INSTALL THE CYLINDER HEAD COVER

  40. Remove camshafts.

    > 150520 REMOVING AND INSTALLING CAMSHAFTS (INCLUDES SETTING TIMING)

  41. Remove vibration damper.

    > 137519 REMOVING AND INSTALLING VIBRATION DAMPER

  42. Remove tensioning rail -1-  and guide rail -2-  for cylinder bank 1.
    1. 42.1  Unscrew bearing pin for tensioning rail -3-  .
    2. 42.2  Remove tensioning rail -1-  using flat-nosed pliers.
    3. 42.3  Unscrew bearing pin for guide rail -4-  .
    4. 42.4  Remove guide rail -2-  using flat-nosed pliers.
    5. 42.5  Lay the timing chain in the chain slot.

  43. Remove tensioning rail -1-  and guide rail -2-  for cylinder bank 2.
    1. 43.1  Unscrew bearing pin for tensioning rail -3-  .
    2. 43.2  Remove tensioning rail -1-  using flat-nosed pliers.
    3. 43.3  Unscrew bearing pin for guide rail -4 and 5-  .
    4. 43.4  Remove guide rail -2-  using flat-nosed pliers.
    5. 43.5  Lay the timing chain in the chain slot.

  44. Remove cylinder heads.

    > 157019 REMOVING AND INSTALLING CYLINDER HEAD

  45. Disassemble cylinder heads.

    > 157037 DISASSEMBLING AND ASSEMBLING CYLINDER HEAD

  46. Pull out displacement bodies for crankcase half on cylinder bank 1 -1-  using flat-nosed pliers.

  47. Remove oil pan (lower part).

    > 175019 REMOVING AND INSTALLING OIL PAN (LOWER PART)

  48. Remove oil pan (upper part).

  49. Remove oil pump.

    > 172019 REMOVING AND REINSTALLING OIL PUMP

  50. Remove oil windage tray -1-  .
    1. 50.1  Unscrew and remove screws -2-  .
    2. 50.2  Remove oil plate -1-  .

  51. Remove pistons for cylinders 1-3.

    > 131020 REMOVING AND INSTALLING PISTONS

  52. Loosen > 9590 - fastening parts  from the > 9771 - engine adapter  on the crankcase half on cylinder bank 1.
  53. Loosen crankcase half on cylinder bank 1 -35-  .
    1. 53.1  Unscrew screws in the sequence -33 to 1-  .
    2. 53.2  Remove engine transport bracket -34-  .

  54. Remove crankcase half on cylinder bank 1 -1-  .
    1. 54.1  Heat the sealant on the joints of the crankcase halves using a hot-air gun.
    2. 54.2  Using a mounting lever, lift the crankcase half on cylinder bank 1 -1-  at the positions shown -2 to 5-  and remove the crankcase half on cylinder bank 1.

      Place wooden boards under position -5-  as edge protection while levering.

  55. > 9779 - Holding bridge-1-  must now be installed.
    1. 55.1  Screw in screws -2-  as far as they will go by hand.

  56. Remove pistons with connecting rods for cylinders 4-6.

    > 131020 REMOVING AND INSTALLING PISTONS

  57. > 9779 - Holding bridge  must now be removed.
  58. Remove crankshaft -1-  with timing chains -2-  and connecting rods for cylinders 1-3 -3-  .
    1. 58.1  Remove and dispose of crankshaft sealing rings -4 and 5-  .
    2. 58.2  Remove crankshaft -1-  with timing chains -2-  and connecting rods for cylinders 1-3 -3-  .

  59. Disassemble crankshaft.

  60. Remove tensioning rail for oil pump timing chain -1-  .
    1. 60.1  Unscrew bearing pin -2-  .

  61. Clean the crankcase and sealing faces.
