Installing Rear Wheel Bearing
WARNING:
Mechanical, hydraulic or pneumatic press

→ Always use new screws or nuts following removal.
→ Comply with instructions for repairs.
→ Observe specified tightening torques.
→ Carry out a visual inspection of parts used.
Information
Wheel bearing unit
- The wheel bearing has a magnetized multiple seal, which acts as a pulse sender for the wheel speed sensor.
- The multiple seal -1- must always face upwards when the wheel bearing is set down (this does not apply when pressing the wheel hub into the wheel bearing). Do not damage the multiple seal and do not let it come into contact with magnetic objects (e.g. magnetized screwdriver or magnet).
- Press the wheel hub into the wheel bearing.
Pressing wheel hub into wheel bearing
1 Press tool 2 > VW402 - Pressure plate 3 Wheel hub 4 Wheel bearing 5 > VW401 - Pressure plate - 1.1 Fit special tools as shown in the illustration > Pressing wheel hub into wheel bearing .
- 1.2 Press the wheel hub into the wheel bearing.
- Insert the wheel bearing with the wheel hub into the wheel bearing housing.
- Secure wheel hub -2-
with new screws -1-
on the wheel bearing housing -3-

> Initial tightening 80 N.m (59 ft lb.) > Final tightening + 120°
Removing wheel bearing with wheel hub
- Tighten screws -1-
on retainer plate -2-

> Tightening torque 10 N.m (7.5 ft lb.)
