Preliminary Work

Information 

Secure the steering wheel with the wheels in straight-ahead position or remove the steering wheel with the wheels in straight-ahead position. If this is not done, the airbag contact unit will have to be moved to center position after installation of the steering gear.

1. Position and block the steering wheel and steering column at center position.
2. Raise the vehicle

   > 4X00IN LIFTING THE VEHICLE .

3. Remove front wheels

   > 440519 Removing and installing wheel - section on  "REMOVING ".

4. Remove front underbody cover

   > WM, 519219 REMOVING AND INSTALLING COVER FOR FRONT UNDERBODY - section on "Removing".

5. Remove center part of center underbody cover

   > WM, 519319 REMOVING AND INSTALLING COVER FOR CENTRE UNDERBODY - section on "Removing".

6. Remove front-axle support

   > 400819 REMOVING AND INSTALLING FRONT-AXLE SUPPORT .
