Removing A-Pillar Reinforcement

Information 

Drill out spotwelds A through two plate thicknesses.

Installation position of A-pillar reinforcement

  1. Grind down welded seams -A-  on the door hinges.

  3. Remove supporting plate for longitudinal member for wheel housing.

    Information 

    Loosen connection points on one side only. Do not damage the sheet-metal panel underneath.

    1. 3.1  Drill out spotwelds. > Nr.129 - Spotweld drill  > VAS 882 001 - Spot-weld remover

  4. Heat bonding areas on supporting plate for longitudinal member for wheel housing.
    1. 4.1  Remove supporting plate for longitudinal member for wheel housing.

  5. Drill out spotwelds using > Nr.129 - spotweld drill; see Gr. 2.4; Workshop Equipment Service Information.

  6. Drill out spotwelds using > Nr.129 - spotweld drill; see Gr. 2.4; Workshop Equipment Service Information. 
    1. 6.1  Remove welded seam -A-  .

    Removing A-pillar

  7. Drill through spotwelds -A-  on upper part of roof frame.

    Information 

    Loosen connection points on one side only. Do not damage the sheet-metal panel underneath.

    1. 7.1  Drill out spotwelds -B-  on upper part of roof frame.
    2. 7.2  Make a small gap in area -arrows-  .

  8. Heat bonding areas.
    1. 8.1  Remove A-pillar.

  9. Remove outer side panel section.

    Information 

    Only make cuts in the top plate. Make sure not to damage the plate underneath when doing this.

    1. 9.1  Make cuts. > V.A.G 1561B - Electric cutter  > VAS 6780 - Body saw 
    2. 9.2  Cut outer side panel section to dimension -A-  at the marked area -X-  .

      > Dimension - A - 45 mm 

    3. 9.3  Cut outer side panel section to dimension -B-  at the marked area -X-  .

      > Dimension - B - 30 mm

  10. Drill out spotwelds. > Nr.129 - Spotweld drill  > VAS 882 001 - Spot-weld remover 
    1. 10.1  Heat bonding areas -A-  and -B-  . > V.A.G 1416 - Hot-Air Blower 
    2. 10.2  Heat bonding area marked in yellow. > V.A.G 1416 - Hot-Air Blower 
    3. 10.3  Remove outer side panel section.

    Removing side panel section

  11. Remove inner side panel section.
    1. 11.1  Cut inner side panel section to dimension -A-  and -B-  at the marked area -X-  .

      > Dimension - A - 77 mm 

      > Dimension - B - 70 mm 

      Information 

      Loosen connection points on one side only. Do not damage the sheet-metal panel underneath.

    2. 11.2  Drill out spotwelds. > Nr.129 - Spotweld drill  > VAS 882 001 - Spot-weld remover

  12. Heat bonding areas marked in yellow. > V.A.G 1416 - Hot-Air Blower 
    1. 12.1  Remove inner side panel section.

      > 5X00IN41 GAP DIMENSIONS - section on "Preparing"

  13. Remove lower B-pillar section.
    1. 13.1  Cut lower B-pillar section to dimension -A, B, C, D-  at the marked areas -X-  .

      > Dimension - A - 150 mm 

      > Dimension - B - 30 mm 

      > Dimension - C - 90 mm 

      > Dimension - D - 40 mm

    2. 13.2  Drill out spotwelds. > Nr.129 - Spotweld drill  > VAS 882 001 - Spot-weld remover

    3. 13.3  Cut welded seam in area -D-  .
    4. 13.4  Heat bonding areas marked in yellow. > V.A.G 1416 - Hot-Air Blower

    1. 15.1  Press reinforcement -1-  down in direction of arrow -A-  and swivel it out -a-  .
