Replacing Triggering Unit For Airbag

NOTE: Voltage drop 
  • Irreparable damage to control unit 
  • Damage to control unit 
  • Fault entries in the control unit 
  • Control unit programming/coding is aborted 
  • Malfunctions in the control unit, even during programming/coding 

    → Switch off ignition before disconnecting the control unit.

    → Make sure that the power supply is not interrupted during programming/coding.

    → Connect the battery charger with at least > current 90 A  to the vehicle battery.

Information 

The PIWIS Tester  instructions take precedence since the description may be different with later Tester releases.

The procedure described here has been structured in general terms. Different text or additional information may appear on the PIWIS Tester. 

Information 

To prevent a malfunction of the airbag system, make sure that the vehicle data is correct before locking the airbag control unit. The vehicle data can no longer be corrected after locking the airbag control unit.

  1. Connect the Tester to the vehicle and start it. Switch on ignition.
  2. Select the vehicle type if required.
  3. In the overview  , press F7 to switch to the Additional menu  . The message "Create Vehicle Analysis Log (VAL)?" appears. Press F11 to continue.
  4. Select the Component protection start-up  function in the Additional menu  . Follow instructions and procedure.
    1. 4.1 Select the gateway control unit (master).
    2. 4.2 Read and follow the instructions and information on the Tester.
    3. 4.3 Teach component protection according to menu guidance.
  5. Select the Maintenance of vehicle data  function in the Additional menu  . Press F12 to continue.
  6. Compare the displayed values with the vehicle equipment. Make changes if necessary. Press F12 to continue.
  7. Go back to the overview.
  8. Select the Airbag  control unit in the overview  . Press F12 to continue.
  9. Maintenance/repairs  must now be selected.
  10. Locking  must now be selected. Press F12 to continue.
    1. 10.1 Read the warnings and instructions displayed on the Tester. Press F8 to start.
  11. Establish bus idle.
    1. 11.1 Switch off the ignition.
    2. 11.2 Disconnect VCI module and Tester from the vehicle.
    3. 11.3 Switch off and disconnect the charger.
    4. 11.4 Close all doors and lids.
    5. 11.5 Lock the vehicle.
    6. 11.6 Wait 2 minutes.
    7. 11.7 Unlock the vehicle and connect VCI module and Tester.
    8. 11.8 Connect a charger.
    9. 11.9 Switch on the ignition.
  12. Read out fault memory and erase it if necessary.
  13. Switch ignition off and then on again. Check that the airbag warning light in the instrument cluster comes on and then goes off again after a few seconds.
