Installing Upper Chain Housing Cover (V6 Turbo)

Information 

• The liquid sealant Loctite 5970-BM must be used. 
• The bead of sealant you apply must not be thicker than the prescribed thickness. Excess sealant can block the lubrication system. 
• The chain housing covers must be installed within 5 minutes of applying the sealant 

Information 

The following steps are shown only on one side of the vehicle. They also apply for the other side.

1. Install upper chain housing cover.
   1. 1.1  Carefully apply a continuous bead of sealant -1-  with a thickness of 3 mm all the way around on the sealing face of the chain housing cover.
   2. 1.2  Position upper chain housing cover and fit new screws by hand.

2. Secure upper chain housing cover on right cylinder bank. 
   1. 2.1  Tighten screws in sequence -1 to 8-  .

   > Tightening - torque 9 Nm (6.5 ftlb.)

3. Secure upper chain housing cover on left cylinder Dank. 
   1. 3.1  Tighten screws in sequence -1 to 8-  .

   > Tightening - torque 9 Nm (6.5 ftlb.)

4. Install electric lines for camshaft controller actuators.
   1. 4.1  Position electric lines.
   2. 4.2  Push on and lock cable plugs for camshaft controller actuators -9-  .
   3. 4.3  Clip in retaining clips -10 and 11-  .

5. Install fuel high-pressure line.
   1. 5.1  Coat thread on union nuts -1-  with Microgleit DF 977S. Observe a drying time of at least 5 minutes before fitting.
   2. 5.2  Position high-pressure fuel line and fit union nuts -1-  by hand.
   3. 5.3  Position fuel high-pressure line support and fit new screws -2-  by hand.
   4. 5.4  Tighten screws on high-pressure fuel line support -2-  and union nuts on high-pressure fuel line -1-  in the following sequence:

   Tighten screws on high-pressure fuel line support -2-  .

   > Tightening - torque 8 Nm (5.9 ftlb.) 

   final tightening torque + 45 Nm (33.2 ftlb.) 

   Tighten union nuts on high-pressure fuel line -1-  .

   > Tightening - torque of 10 Nm (7.4 ftlb.) 

   Torque angle 60°

6. Only after removing upper chain housing cover on right cylinder Dank: 

   Install coolant pipe for right cylinder bank -3-  .

   1. 6.1  Replace sealing ring.
   2. 6.2  Position coolant pipe -3-  with support -2-  .
   3. 6.3  Fit and tighten screw securing coolant pipe flange -4-  to cylinder head.

      > Tightening - torque 9 Nm (6.5 ftlb.) 

   4. 6.4  Fitting and tightening screw on coolant pipe support -1-  .

      > Tightening - torque 9 Nm (6.5 ftlb.)

7. Only after removing upper chain housing on left cylinder bank: 

   Install coolant pipe for left cylinder bank -3-  .

   1. 7.1  Replace sealing rings.
   2. 7.2  Position coolant pipe for left cylinder bank -3-  .
   3. 7.3  Fit and tighten screws for coolant pipe on left cylinder bank -1 and 2-  .

   > Tightening - torque 9 Nm (6.5 ftlb.)
