Installing Shock Absorber Fork

  1. If you are replacing the spring strut fork:  Convert air guide

    Air guide 

    1. 1.1  Cut tie-wrap -2-  .
    2. 1.2  Fit air guide -1-  with a new tie-wrap -2-  on the new spring strut fork using > VAS 6927 - Tie-wrap pliers  .
  2. Open up clamped connection for shock absorber fork.

    Spreader 3424 (shown fitted) 

    1. 2.1  Insert > 3424 - spreader-1-  in the slot -2-  on the shock absorber fork.
    2. 2.2  Turn > 3424 - spreader-1-  through 90 degrees.

      Information 

      T-bolt -1-  of the spring strut -2-  must engage in the groove on the shock absorber fork -3-  .

  3. Lower the lifting equipment as far as required until the spring strut fork can be fitted on the shock absorber tube.
  4. Fit upper trailing arm -1-  on the wheel bearing housing.

    Mounting for upper trailing arm 

    1. 4.1  Insert pins of the upper trailing arm into the bores on the wheel bearing housing.
    2. 4.2  Screw in screws -2-  as far as they will go (do not tighten!).
  5. Screw in threaded joints securing shock absorber fork -1-  as far as possible (do not tighten!).

    Information 

    Please note:  The installation direction of the screw -4-  has changed in the course of series production and must now be installed in the opposite direction to the installation direction shown.

    Mounting for shock absorber fork 

    1. 5.1  Insert threaded joint -4-  securing shock absorber fork to spring strut and screw in nut as far as it will go.
    2. 5.2  Insert threaded joint -3-  securing shock absorber fork to trailing arm and screw in nuts as far as possible.
    3. 5.3  Insert threaded joint -2-  securing connecting link to shock absorber fork and screw in nuts as far as possible.
  6. Tighten threaded joints in zero position.
    WARNING: Wheel bearing housing raised incorrectly 
    • Risk of crushing 
    • Risk of damage to components 
      • Wear personal protective gear.
      • Do not raise the wheel suspension higher than the normal vehicle position (vehicle resting on wheels).

    Information 

    Threaded joints must only be tightened in zero position to prevent warping in the bearings.

    1. 6.1  Lift the wheel suspension to zero position using lifting equipment (e.g. > VAS 6931 - Transmission and Engine Jack  ).

      Zero position (shown on rear axle as an example) 

    2. 6.2  Tighten threaded joint -2-  securing upper trailing arm -1-  to wheel bearing housing. > Tightening torque 40 Nm (30 ftlb.)

      Mounting for upper trailing arm 

    3. 6.3  Tighten threaded joint -4-  securing shock absorber fork to spring strut. > Initial tightening 40 Nm (30 ftlb.)  > Final tightening + 180° 
    4. 6.4  Tighten threaded joint -3-  securing shock absorber fork to trailing arm. > Initial tightening 90 Nm (67 ftlb.)  > Final tightening + 90° 
    5. 6.5  Tighten threaded joint -2-  securing connecting link to shock absorber fork.

      Conventional connecting link: > Initial tightening 40 Nm (30 ftlb.)  > Final tightening + 90° 

      PDCC connecting link: > Initial tightening 60 Nm (44 ftlb.)  > Final tightening + 90°
