Remove The Control Chain

NOTIFICATION 

Timing not set correctly 

  1. > T40263 - Wrench a/f 21  (-2-  ) and > T40314 - adapter  (-1-  ) must be fitted on the crankshaft (-3-  ).

  2. Use > T40263 - wrench a/f 21  and > T40314 - adapter  to turn the crankshaft clockwise until the marking on the vibration damper (-1-  ) is positioned at TDC  (-2-  ).

  3. The markings on the camshaft actuators (cylinder bank 1) -1 and 2-  must be aligned with the reference points -Arrows-  on the camshaft housing. Turn the crankshaft further by one turn if necessary.

  4. The markings on the camshaft actuators (cylinder bank 2) -1 and 2-  must be aligned with the reference points -Lines-  on the camshaft housing.

  5. Remove stoppers on camshafts (-1-  ).
    1. 5.1  Release and disconnect quick connector (-3-  ).
    2. 5.2  Move vacuum hoses (-4-  ) aside so that the stoppers on the camshafts are accessible.
    3. 5.3  Unscrew screws on stoppers on camshafts (-2-  ).
    4. 5.4  Remove stoppers (-1-  ).

  6. Screw adapter T40331/2  (-1-  ) from tool set > T40331 - clamp camshaft  into the camshaft housing and tighten with 9 Nm ((6.5 ftlb.)  .

    Information 

    The camshaft clamp must be easy to insert and must not be fitted using a striking tool. 

  7. Fit camshaft clamps > T40331 - camshaft clamp  (-2 to 5-  ).
    1. 7.1 Camshaft clamp 40331/1  (-3-  )

      Right cylinder bank 1:  insert with inscription "A" facing away from the engine.

      Right cylinder bank 2:  Insert with inscription "B" facing away from the engine.

      Turn the crankshaft back and forth slightly to do this, if necessary.

    2. 7.2 Right cylinder bank 1: Secure camshaft clamps T40331/1, T40331/4 and T40331/5  (-3 to 5-  ) using T40331/9  (-2-  ).

      Left cylinder bank 2: Secure camshaft clamps T40331/1, T40331/6 and T40331/5  (-3 to 5-  ) using T40331/9  (-2-  ).

      T40331/9  (-2-  ) must be screwed in by hand. Tighten screws on the camshaft clamps -Arrows-  to 9 Nm (6.5 ftlb.)  .

  8. Remove left bracket for engine mount -1-  .
    1. 8.1  Unscrew screws -2-  .

  9. Secure the crankshaft.
    1. 9.1  Unscrew screw plug (-1-  ) from bore (-2-  ).
    2. 9.2  > T40069 - Locking pin  must be screwed into the bore (-2-  ) by hand.

      Turn the crankshaft back and forth slightly to do this, if necessary.

    3. 9.3  Tighten > T40069 - locking pin  to 20 Nm (15 ftlb.)  .

  10. Fit > VAS 261 001 - ring spanner insert, a/f 41  with > T90001 - counter-hold tool  on the camshaft actuator.

    The > T90001 - counterhold tool  can only be inserted at one position. To do this, the markings (-1 and 2-  ) on the camshaft actuator and chain housing must be aligned.

  11. Release camshaft actuator (-1-  ).
    1. 11.1  Counter the camshaft actuator (-1-  ) using > VAS 261 001 - ring tool attachment, a/f 41  (-2-  ) and > T90001 - counterhold tool  and loosen using > T90000 - socket E24  (-3-  ).

      Do not unscrew the camshaft actuator  (-1-  ) from the camshaft. 

    2. 11.2  Mark camshaft actuators and camshafts for re-installation using a colored marker.

  12. Lock both chain tensioners.

    Information 

    The chain tensioner piston is oil-damped and can only be pressed back slowly and with constant pressure.

    1. 12.1  Press the chain tensioner piston back fully using a screwdriver.
    2. 12.2  Fix the chain tensioner (-1-  ) in place using > T03006 - locking pin  (-3-  ).

  13. Unscrew control valves and remove camshafts actuators.
  14. Remove tensioning rail (-1-  ).
    1. 14.1  Unscrew bearing pin for tension rail (-2-  ).
    2. 14.2  Remove tension rail (-1-  ).

  15. Remove timing chains together with tension rail.
