Replacing Sealing Ring For All-Wheel Flanged Shaft

WARNING: Hot fluid 
  • Danger of scalding 
    1. → Let the fluid cool down.
    2. → Wear personal protective gear.
  1. Remove all-wheel flanged shaft -1-  .

    All-wheel flange shaft

    1. 1.1 > VW771 - Multi-purpose tool-2-  with VW 771/43 -3-  and VW 771/45 -4-  must be fitted on the all-wheel flanged shaft -1-  .
    2. 1.2 Pull off and remove all-wheel flanged shaft -1-  using > VW771 - multi-purpose tool-2-  , VW 771/43 -3-  and VW 771/45 -4-  .
    3. 1.3 Remove tools from flanged shaft -1-  .
  2. > VAS 6622A - Used oil collection and extraction unit  must be placed under the transfer gear.
  3. Remove sealing ring on all-wheel flanged shaft -1-  using > VW681 - hook-2-  .

    Sealing ring for halfshaft flange

  4. Clean sealing surfaces thoroughly.

    Information 

    • The open side of the sealing ring must be facing the transmission. 
  5. Fit new  sealing ring.
    1. 5.1 Coat the external circumference and sealing lip on the sealing ring with a light coating of ATF.
    2. 5.2 Tap new sealing ring in as far as it will go using > T40189 - pressure piece  .
  6. Replace circlip on flanged shaft -1-  .

    Circlip on flanged shaft

    1. 6.1 Remove circlip on flanged shaft -1-  using VAS 5503 A -2-  .
    2. 6.2 Insert new  circlip on flanged shaft -1-  using VAS 5503 A -2-  .
  7. Half-fill the space for the all-wheel drive sealing ring between the sealing lip and dust lip with sealing grease G 052 128 A1  .

    Information 

    Make sure not to damage the sealing ring when guiding the all-wheel flanged shaft into the final drive.

  8. Install all-wheel flanged shaft -1-  .

    All-wheel flange shaft

    1. 8.1 Fit all-wheel flanged shaft -1-  and insert it into the final drive at the front right with a quick jerk -Arrow-  .
  9. Check that the all-wheel flanged shaft is fitted correctly.
    1. 9.1 Hold the all-wheel flanged shaft with both hands and pull it outwards.
    2. 9.2 If the all-wheel flanged shaft can only be pulled out again using considerable force, the all-wheel flanged shaft is fitted correctly.
    3. 9.3 If necessary, press the all-wheel flanged shaft back into the final drive at the front right.
