Replacing Sealing Ring (Pinion Shaft)

Pinion shaft

1. 2.1 Fit old seal -2-  for protection of the housing half.
2. 2.2 Carefully loosen and pull off pinion shaft -1-  using > VW637/2 - Puller-3-  .
   1. 2.2.1 Make sure that the shim behind the pinion shaft -1-  is not lost.

Taper roller bearing (pinion shaft)

1. 3.1 Fir > VAS 6961 - Separating device-2-  , > VW447H - Pressure plate-3-  and > VW416B - Pipe-4-  as shown.
2. 3.2 Press out taper roller bearing using > VAS 6654 - Workshop Press  .

Sealing ring (pinion shaft)

1. 4.1 Pull old sealing ring -1-  off the pinion shaft.
2. 4.2 Clean contact surfaces on the pinion shaft.
3. 4.3 > T40381 - Fit assembly fixture  /1 -2-  on the pinion shaft.
4. 4.4 Push new  sealing ring -1-  onto pinion shaft with the open side down as far as it will go.
5. 4.5 Remove > T40381 - assembly fixture  /1 -2-  .

Taper roller bearing (pinion shaft)

1. 5.1 Support pinion shaft on > VW511 - Thrust washer-2-  .
2. 5.2 Position taper roller bearing -1-  and > 3118 - pressure piece-3-  as well as > VW447I - Pressure plate-4-  as shown.
3. 5.3 Carefully press on taper roller bearing -1-  using > VAS 6654 - Workshop Press  .

1. 8.1 Insert new  spacer -2-  .
2. 8.2 Fit and tighten new screw -1-  .

   > Tightening torque 20 Nm (15 ftlb.)
