Removing Rear CARDAN Shaft

NOTE: Incorrect handling of cardan shaft

Risk of damage to the cardan shaft
Risk of damage to the centre bearing
Humming noises caused by defective centre bearing
1. → When one of the two flanges on the cardan shaft has been released, relieve the tension on the centre bearing.
2. → Follow the recommended procedures during installation, otherwise the position of the cardan shaft in its original place is no longer guaranteed.
3. → Do not kink the cardan shaft (bend by max. 10°); only store and transport it in elongated position.

Information

Mark the position of all parts in relation to each other before removal.
Parts must be re-installed at the marked positions to prevent imbalance, which can cause damage to the bearings and humming noises.

Remove protective plate -1- .

1. 1.1 Unscrew and remove screws -2- .
2. 1.2 Remove protective plate -1- .
Loosen single-lug clip -1- on the cardan shaft at the transmission side.

Remove heat shield -1- .

1. 3.1 Unscrew nuts -2- .
2. 3.2 Remove heat shield -1- .
Loosen cardan shaft from the rear axle differential.
Get another person to press the brake or activate the electronic parking brake to prevent the cardan shaft from turning.

Cardan shaft on rear axle differential
1. 4.1 Unscrew and remove screws -1- .
2. 4.2 Carefully loosen the cardan shaft from the rear axle differential flange.
Information

The help of another person is required to prevent the cardan shaft in the centre bearing from flexing more than 10°.
Remove cardan shaft -1- .

Centre bearing with rear cardan shaft
1. 5.1 Unscrew screws -2- on the centre bearing.
2. 5.2 Carefully remove cardan shaft -1- from the rear axle differential flange first.
3. 5.3 Carefully pull cardan shaft -1- off the transmission end shaft and guide it out.
