Installing Rear CARDAN Shaft

Information 

The markings on the cardan shaft and rear axle differential may be turned by max. 30° with respect to each other for joining.

1. Clean flange surfaces and through-holes on the cardan shaft and rear axle differential (to remove grease). Make sure no dirt gets in, particularly during assembly.

   Clean through-holes and threaded bores with brake cleaner and leave to dry off.

2. Position new single-lug clip -1-  on the cardan shaft.

   Information 

   • When securing the cardan shaft, press the centre bearing onto the screws to the left in direction of travel and screw on securely! 
3. Install cardan shaft -1-  .

   The help of another person is required to prevent the cardan shaft in the centre bearing from flexing > 10°.

   1. 3.1 Carefully push the cardan shaft onto the transmission end shaft first.

      Before pushing it on, make sure that the front and rear sections are positioned as flush as possible (flexing of max. 10° is acceptable)!

   2. 3.2 Align the cardan shaft on the rear axle differential with the marking.
   3. 3.3 Fit screws -2-  on the centre bearing, press centre bearing to the left in direction of travel and tighten at the screws.

      > Tightening torque 20 Nm (15 ftlb.) 

4. Secure cardan shaft on the rear axle differential.

   1. 4.1 Position new plates and fit new screws -1-  until the cardan shaft is positioned on the rear axle differential flange.
   2. 4.2 Tighten screws -1-  .

      Tighten the screw closest to the coloured dots to its final tightening torque first!

      > Initial tightening 50 Nm (37 ftlb.) 

      > Final tightening torque angle 90° 

5. Install heat shield -1-  .

   1. 5.1 Position heat shield -1-  .
   2. 5.2 Screw on and tighten nuts -2-  .

      > Tightening torque 2.1 Nm (1.6 ftlb.) 

   Information 

   • For adequate clearance for the closing tool for the single-lug clip on the front joint, push the cardan shaft to the rear. 
   • Before closing the single-lug clip, check that the cardan shaft is positioned correctly and that the single-lug clip is fitted securely. 
6. Secure single-lug clip -1-  using > V.A.G 1275A - hose clip pliers  or > VAS 6199A - clamping pliers  .

7. Install protective plate -1-  .

   1. 7.1 Position protective plate -1-  .
   2. 7.2 Fit and tighten screws -2-  .

      > Tightening torque 28 Nm (20.7 ftlb.)
