Removing Automatic Transmission

WARNING: Danger of objects or loads falling down 
  • Risk of squashing or crushing 
    1. → Secure components to prevent them from falling down. 
  1. Have suitable stoppers ready for closing off the line connections.
  2. Disconnect coolant hose -1-  on additional coolant pump at the right.

    1. 2.1 Loosen spring band clamp -2-  using > VAS 6890 - spring band clamps pliers  .
    2. 2.2 Disconnect coolant hose -1-  from additional coolant pump -3-  .
    3. 2.3 Close off line connections with stoppers.
  3. Unscrew screws on heat shield -2-  and remove heat shield -1-  .

  4. Disconnect additional coolant pump -1-  at the left.

    1. 4.1 Release and disconnect electric plug connection for additional coolant pump -2-  .
    2. 4.2 Unscrew screws on additional coolant pump holder -3-  .
    3. 4.3 Loosen spring band clamp -4-  using > VAS 6890 - spring band clamps pliers  .
    4. 4.4 Disconnect coolant hose -5-  from coolant pipe -6-  .
    5. 4.5 Close off line connections with stoppers.
    6. 4.6 Set additional coolant pump -1-  aside.
  5. Disconnect coolant line.

    1. 5.1 Loosen spring band clamp -1-  using > VAS 6890 - spring band clamps pliers  .
    2. 5.2 Disconnect coolant hose -2-  from coolant pipe -3-  .
    3. 5.3 Close off line connections with stoppers.
  6. Only if not performed while removing engine: 

    Unscrew drive plate screws -1-  .

    Drive plate screws

    1. 6.1 Remove cap -2-  .
    2. 6.2 Unscrew drive plate screw -1-  .

      Information 

      To make it easier to turn the engine, the drive belts can be removed from the generator and air-conditioning compressor.

      > Removing and installing drive belt (V8 biturbo) 

    3. 6.3 Turn the engine further and repeat the procedure on all drive plate screws.
  7. Suspend automatic transmission using workshop crane and > 3311 - hook and support tool  .
    1. 7.1 > 3311 - Hook and support tool  must then be aligned. Insert suitable hooks if necessary.
  8. Disconnect ATF lines -1 and 2-  .

    ATF lines

    1. 8.1 Loosen screw on ATF lines -3-  as far as required until the ATF lines -1 and 2-  can be turned, but do not unscrew fully.
    2. 8.2 Carefully turn ATF lines -1 and 2-  as far as required in the connections until the threaded joint for the automatic transmission is accessible.
  9. Remove automatic transmission -1-  .

    Automatic transmission

    1. 9.1 Unscrew screws on automatic transmission -4-  . Use a commercially available 3/8-inch flexible-head socket (a/f 16) to do this.
    2. 9.2 Unscrew screws for automatic transmission at the top -2 and 3-  .
    3. 9.3 Unscrew screws for automatic transmission -5 to 7-  .
    4. 9.4 Guide automatic transmission -1-  out and away from the engine with the help of another person.
