Installing Lower Steering Column

Information 

• Do not carry the steering column lower part at the universal joint or seal bellows. 
• Do not hold the universal joint or the seal bellows when removing and fitting. 

1. Insert lower steering column via the driver's footwell.

   Do not hold steering column at upper universal joint or sealing sleeve! 

   1. 1.1 Position lower steering column with sealing sleeve. The sealing lip must be lying flush with the sound absorber.
2. Secure sealing bellows -1-  to the body.

   Sealing bellows for lower steering column (LHD vehicle)

   1. 2.1 Fit and tighten screw (LHD vehicles only) -2-  .

      > Tightening torque 4.5 Nm (3.3 ftlb.) 

   2. 2.2 Fit and tighten nuts -3-  .

      > Tightening torque 4.5 Nm (3.3 ftlb.) 

3. Secure universal joint -1-  at the steering column centre.

   Universal joint for steering column centre

   1. 3.1 Fit universal joint -1-  for lower steering column on the steering column centre splines.
   2. 3.2 Fit and tighten new screw -2-  on the universal joint -1-  .

      > Initial tightening 20 Nm (14.8 ftlb.)  > Final tightening + 90° 

4. Secure universal joint -1-  to the power-steering gear.

   1. 4.1 Fit universal joint -1-  for lower steering column on the power-steering gear splines.
   2. 4.2 Fit and tighten new screw -2-  on the universal joint -1-  .

      > Initial tightening 20 Nm (14.8 ftlb.)  > Final tightening + 90°
