Removing Front Axle

  • Risk of squashing or crushing 
    • → Secure components to prevent them from falling down.
CAUTION: Heavy components 
  • Risk of squashing 
    • → Wear personal protective gear.
    • → Get someone to help if necessary.
  1. Remove side member -1-  .

    Longitudinal member

    1. 1.1 Unscrew screws -2-  .
    2. 1.2 Unscrew screw -3-  and remove slide -4-  .
    3. 1.3 Unscrew screw securing lock carrier to longitudinal member -5-  .
    4. 1.4 Unscrew screws -6-  and remove longitudinal member -1-  .
  2. Disconnect electric wire harness for power steering -1-  .

    Electric wire harness for power-steering gear

    1. 2.1 Release and disconnect electric plug connection of power steering -2 and 3-  .
    2. 2.2 Unclip line clip -4-  .
    3. 2.3 Set electric wire harness for power steering -1-  aside.
  3. Unclip clips -1 and 2-  on front axle carrier.

  4. Loosen line bracket -1-  .

    Wiring holder

    1. 4.1 Unscrew screw for line bracket -2-  .
    2. 4.2 Set line bracket -1-  with electric wiring harness -3-  aside.
  5. Disconnect electric plug connections -1 and 2-  .

    Electric plug connections for engine mount

    1. 5.1 Detach, unlock and disconnect the electrical plug connection -1-  from the holder.
    2. 5.2 Release and disconnect electric plug connections -2-  .
  6. Only for vehicles with supporting mounts: 

    Unscrew screws securing supporting mount to front axle carrier -1-  .

  7. Unscrew screw on engine carrier -1-  .

  8. Secure front axle carrier -1-  .

    Securing front-axle carrier

    1. 8.1 Position > VAS 6931 - engine and gearbox jack  with > T40173A - gearbox support  under the front axle carrier -1-  and align it -Arrows-  .
    2. 8.2 Support the front axle using > VAS 6931 - engine and gearbox jack  and secure the front axle carrier -1-  with a tension strap.
    3. 8.3 Unscrew screw -2-  , replace it with > T40327 - locating pin  and tighten > T40327 - locating pin  to 20 Nm.
    4. 8.4 Repeat procedure for screws -3 to 5-  one after the other.

    Information 

    You will need a second mechanic to help you with this step.

  9. Remove front axle -1-  .

    Rear screw on front axle carrier

    1. 9.1 Unscrew rear screws on front axle carrier -2-  .
    2. 9.2 Lower the front axle -1-  on > VAS 6931 - engine and gearbox jack  , getting another person to help to guide it down.
    3. 9.3 Remove front axle -1-  from > VAS 6931 - engine and gearbox jack  with the help of another person and set it down carefully.
