Removing Coil Spring
- Risk of squashing or bruising
→ Do not reach into the danger area.
→ Relieve the tension on components before starting work.
→ Secure components to prevent them from loosening suddenly.
Information
- If the coil spring is replaced: Always replace coil springs in pairs only.
- Due to the settling behavior and indents, use new spring plates to replace the coil springs.
Information
- Do not press coil springs together onto the block.
- Do not damage the surface of the coil springs (corrosion protection).
- Do not use solvents to clean the coil springs.
Information
To remove/install the coil spring, use the > VAS 6907 - spring tensioning system and > VAS 6274/12 - supplement set for spring tensioning system .
Information
Greasing the spindle
- Before removing and installing each spring, grease the spindle -2- at the front with a light coating of the supplied grease
- Only grease the spindle using the supplied lubricant. Other types of lubricant will damage the spindle.

Information
Inserting the spreader device prevents the axle from moving upwards when tensioning the coil spring and this makes it easier to install.
- Always remove the spreader device from the vehicle after installing the coil spring.
- Spreader device VAS 6274/12-4 -1-
must be inserted between the upper trailing arm and body when the coil spring is installed.
Fitting spreader device
- 1.1
Adjust the upper part of the spreader device for the respective vehicle side:
- Left side of vehicle: "R" must be visible.
- Right side of vehicle: "L" must be visible.
- 1.2 Adjust the height of the spreader device at the hexagon -2- until it is fitted securely.
- 1.1
Adjust the upper part of the spreader device for the respective vehicle side:
- Insert spring compressor.
Spring compressor
- 2.1 Insert pressure plate with pivot bearing VAS 6274/12-1 -1- at the bottom of the coil spring.
- 2.2 Insert pressure plate with latch VAS 6274/12-2 -2- at the top of the coil spring.
- 2.3 Screw both pressure plates up/down as far as required until they have at least 3 windings enclosed. Position pressure plates so that they are not touching the trailing arm.
- 2.4 Insert piston VAS 6274/12-7 -3- with T-handle wrench VAS 6907/6 into the pressure plate with latch -2- .
- 2.5
Press securing lever on pressure plate with latch in -Arrow direction-
to secure the piston.
Locking lever
- 2.6 Fit spindle VAS 6907/3 -4- with socket wrench VAS 6907/5 into piston -3- (do not tighten yet!).
- 2.7
Secure the twist lock holders -5-
of the two pressure plates using the supplied screws.
Spring compressor
- Insert holding wrench VAS 6907/7 -1-
into bracket -2-
to counter the movement.
Holding wrench
Information
Before tensioning the coil spring, check that the pressure plates are seated correctly.
- Tension the coil spring and counter at the holding wrench. > Coil spring with spring compressor
Coil spring with spring compressor
- Remove coil spring by pulling it upwards -arrow A-
.
Coil spring
If the spindle projects out over the end of the coil spring, screw the spindle back slightly (do not unscrew fully-danger of injury!).
- Insert pre-tensioned spring into the hydraulic clamping device VAS 6907/9.
Hydraulic clamping device
- 7.1
Left coil spring:
Fit underside of end of spring in the spring tensioning system at marking "L".
Right coil spring:
Fit underside of end of spring in the spring tensioning system at marking "R".
Marking (left, as an example)
- 7.2 Use > VAS 6179 - foot pump to tension the coil spring in the hydraulic clamping device -9- until the tension on the pressure plates -1.2- is relieved.
- 7.1
Left coil spring:
- Unscrew spindle using socket wrench VAS 6907/5. > Spindle
Spindle
- Unscrew screws for the twist lock holders and remove pressure plates.
- Relieve all tension on the coil spring.
