Replacing Rear Axle Housing
- Remove rear connecting links -1-

Rear connecting link
- 1.1 Unscrew screw -2- and counter at the nut -3- .
- 1.2 Unscrew screw -4- and counter at the nut -5- .
- 1.3 Remove rear connecting link -1- .
- Disconnect electric wire harness for anti-roll bar -1-
.
Clips on electric wiring harness for PDCC anti-roll bar
- 2.1 Unclip clips -2- from rear axle housing.
- 2.2 Pull grommet for electric wire harness for anti-roll bar -3- out of the holder.
- Remove rear anti-roll bar -2-
.
Anti-roll bar on rear axle (PDCC)
- 3.1 Unscrew screws on anti-roll bar clamps -1- and remove anti-roll bar clamps -3- .
- 3.2 Remove anti-roll bar -2- from rear axle housing.
- Remove rear axle trim panel -1-
.

- 4.1 Unclip clips -2- .
- 4.2 Remove rear axle trim panel -1- by pulling it downwards.
- Remove rear control arms -1 and 2-
.
Rear control arms
- 5.1 Mark the position of the eccentric screws for re-installation.
- 5.2 Unscrew screws for upper control arms -3 and 4- and remove upper control arms
- 5.3 Unscrew screw -5- .
- 5.4 Unscrew screws for lower control arms -6 and 7- and counter at the nuts. Remove lower control arms -2- .
- Unscrew screw for rear drive shafts
Drive shaft screw
- Remove rear angle sensor for headlight beam adjustment (HBA) -3-
.
Rear angle sensor for headlight beam adjustment (HBA) on body
- 7.1 Screw off nut -1- .
- 7.2 Unscrew screw -2- .
- 7.3 Disengage rear angle sensor for headlight beam adjustment (HBA) -3- (-4-) and remove it.
- Remove front control arms -1 and 2-
.
Front control arms
- 8.1 Unscrew and remove screws -3 and 4- .
- 8.2
Remove wheel bearing housing -5-
with front control arms -1 and 2-
from the drive shaft, making sure not to overstrain the drive shaft joint.
Information
The dust shield for the drive shaft cannot be removed without irreparable damage.
- Remove rear drive shaft -1-
.
Removing rear drive shaft
- 9.1 Fit tyre iron at position -Arrow- .
- 9.2 Lever out rear drive shaft -1- ard remove from final drive.
- Only for vehicles with rear axle steering:
Remove servo motor for rear axle steering -1-
Servo motor for rear axle steering
- 10.1 Unscrew screws on servo motor for rear axle steering -2- .
- 10.2 Remove servo motor for rear axle steering -1- together with tie rods -3- .
- For vehicles without rear axle steering:
Remove tie rod -1- .
Tie rod on rear axle housing
- 11.1 Mark the position of the eccentric screws for re-installation.
- 11.2
Unscrew screw on tie rod -2-
, counter at the nut at the same time and remove tie rod -1-
.

You will need a second mechanic to help you with this step.
- Remove final drive -1-
.
Removing final drive
- 12.1 Unscrew nut on final drive -2- .
- 12.2 Unscrew screw on front final drive -3- .
- 12.3 Unscrew screws on rear final drive -4- .
- 12.4 Remove final drive -1- from rear axle housing.
- Have new rear axle housing ready.
Information
You will need a second mechanic to help you with this step.
- Install final drive -1-
in new rear axle housing.
Fitting final drive
- 14.1 Position final drive -1- in rear axle housing.
- 14.2 Replace screws for final drive.
- 14.3 Replace nut for final drive.
- 14.4 Screw in nuts -2- and screws -3 and 4- but do not tighten yet.
- Only for vehicles with rear axle steering:
Install servo motor for rear axle steering -1- .

- 15.1 Position servo motor for rear axle steering -1- together with tie rods -3- on rear axle housing.
- 15.2 Replace screws on servo motor for rear axle steering -2- .
- 15.3 Screw in new screws on servo motor for rear axle steering -2- , but do not tighten yet.
- For vehicles without rear axle steering:
Install tie rod -1- .

- 16.1 Position tie rod -1- .
- 16.2 Fit screw on tie rod -2- with nut and align according to the markings from removal, but do not tighten yet.
- Replace output shaft sealing ring.
- Install rear drive shafts.

Replace circlip -1-
on the rear drive shafts.

Information
The dust shield for the drive shaft cannot be removed without irreparable damage.
- 18.2
Replace dust shield on rear drive shaft.
Information
- Make sure not to damage the sealing ring when guiding the drive shaft into the final drive.
- Check that the profile splines on the drive shaft and transmission side interlock securely!
- The use of an impact tool is not permitted.

Fit rear drive shaft -1-
into the final drive with a quick jerking movement -arrow-

Fitting rear drive shaft
- 18.1
Replace circlip -1-
on the rear drive shafts.
- Check that drive shafts are fitted correctly.
- 19.1 Hold the joint with both hands and pull outwards.
- 19.2 If the rear drive shaft can only be pulled out again using considerable force, the rear drive shaft is fitted correctly.
- 19.3 Press the rear drive shaft back into the final drive if necessary.
- Install wheel bearing housing -5-
together with the front control arms -1 and 2-
.
Front control arms
- 20.1 Fit new screws -3- and 4- .
- 20.2 Fit wheel bearing housing -5- with control arms -1 and 2- on the rear drive shaft and position on the rear axle housing.
- 20.3 Fit screws -3 and 4- with nuts and screw them in, but do not tighten yet.
- Screw in new
screws for rear drive shafts but do not tighten yet.

- Install rear angle sensor for headlight beam adjustment (HBA) -3-

- 22.1 Position rear angle sensor for headlight beam adjustment (HBA) -3- in cut-out -4- .

Fit and tighten screw -2-

> Tightening torque 8 Nm (6 ftlb.)

Position connecting link and screw on and tighten nut
> Tightening torque 8 Nm (6 ftlb.)
- Install rear control arms -1 and 2-

Rear control arms
- 23.1 Replace screws -3 and 7- .
- 23.2 Position lower control arm -2- together with shock absorber.
- 23.3 Fit screw for lower control arm -6- , but do not tighten yet.
- 23.4 Fit screw for lower control arm -7- with nut, but do not tighten yet.
- 23.5 Position upper control arm -1- and fit screws -3 and 4- , but do not tighten yet.
- 23.6 Replace screw -5- .
- 23.7 Fit screw -5- , but do not tighten yet.
- 23.8 Align eccentric screws according to the markings from removal.
- Install rear anti-roll bar -2-

- 24.1 Position anti-roll bar -2- on rear axle housing.

Fit anti-roll bar clamps -3-
and screw in and tighten screws on anti-roll bar clamps
> Initial tightening 25 Nm (22 ftlb.) (18.4 ftlb.)
> Final tightening torque + 90°
- Install rear connecting links

- 25.2 Fit screw -2- and screw on nut -3- .
- 25.3 Fit screw -4- and screw on nut -5- .

Tighten screws -2 and 4-
and counter at nuts -3 and 5-

Screw securing rear connecting link to control arm:
> Initial tightening 40 Nm (29.4 ftlb.) (29.5 ftlb.)
> Final tightening + 180°
Screw securing rear connecting link to anti-roll bar:
> Initial tightening 40 Nm (29.4 ftlb.) (29.5 ftlb.)
> Final tightening + 180°
Information
Threaded joints must only be tightened in zero position to prevent warping in the bearings.
- Tighten screws on control arms.
Zero position (shown as an example)
WARNING: Danger of objects or loads falling down- Risk of squashing or crushing
→ Secure components to prevent them from falling down.
WARNING: Wheel bearing housing raised incorrectly- Risk of crushing
- Risk of damage to components
→ Wear personal protective gear.
→ Do not raise the wheel suspension higher than the normal vehicle position (vehicle resting on wheels).
Information
Threaded joints must only be tightened in zero position to prevent warping in the bearings.
- 26.1 Before tightening the trailing arm screws: Lift the wheel suspension to zero position using lifting equipment (e.g. > VAS 6931 - transmission and engine jack) . > Zero position (shown as an example)

> Tightening torque 140 Nm (103 ftlb.) (103.3 ftlb.)
Screw securing lower trailing arm to wheel bearing housing:
> Initial tightening 130 Nm (96 ftlb.) (95.9 ftlb.)
> Final tightening + 180 (133 ftlb.) °
Screw securing front upper control arm to rear axle housing:
> Initial tightening 40 Nm (29.5 ftlb.)
> Final tightening + 180 (133 ftlb.) °
Screw securing rear upper control arm to rear axle housing:
> Initial tightening 70 Nm (51.6 ftlb.)
> Final tightening torque + 180°
Screw securing rear upper control arm to wheel bearing housing:
> Initial tightening torque 100 Nm (73.8 ftlb.)
> Final tightening torque + 180 (133 ftlb) °
Screw securing control arm to rear axle housing:
> Pre-tightening 40 Nm (30 ftlb.) (29.5 ftlb.)
> Final tightening + 180 (133 ftlb.) °
Screw securing tie rod to wheel bearing housing:
> Initial tightening torque 100 Nm (73.8 ftlb.)
> Final tightening torque + 180 (133 ftlb.)
- 26.3 Only for vehicles without rear axle steering:
Tighten screw securing tie rod to rear axle housing.
> Tightening torque 90 Nm (66 ftlb.) (66.4 ftlb.)
- Risk of squashing or crushing
- Fit rear axle trim panel

- 27.1 Replace clips -2- .
- 27.2 Fit rear axle trim panel -1- on lower trailing arms.
- 27.3 Clip in new clips -2- .
