Removing Front Axle

WARNING:
Danger of objects or loads falling down
- Risk of squashing or crushing
- Secure components to prevent them from falling down.
CAUTION:
Heavy components
- Risk of squashing
- Wear personal protective gear.
- Get someone to help if necessary.
- Remove side member
Longitudinal member
- 1.1 Unscrew screws -2- .
- 1.2 Unscrew screw -3- and remove slide -4- .
- 1.3 Unscrew screw securing lock carrier to longitudinal member -5- .
- 1.4 Unscrew screws -6- and remove longitudinal member
- Disconnect electric wire harness for power steering
Electric wire harness for power-steering gear
- 2.1 Release and disconnect electric plug connection of power steering -2 and 3- .
- 2.2 Unclip line clip -4- .
- 2.3 Set electric wire harness for power steering -1- aside.
- Unclip clips -1 and 2-
on front axle carrier.

- Loosen line bracket
Wiring holder
- 4.1 Unscrew screw for line bracket -2- .
- 4.2 Set line bracket -1- with electric wiring harness -3- aside.
- Disconnect electric plug connections -1 and 2-

Electric plug connections for engine mount
- 5.1 Detach, unlock and disconnect the electrical plug connection -1- from the holder.
- 5.2 Release and disconnect electric plug connections -2- .
- Only for vehicles with supporting mounts:
Unscrew screws securing supporting mount to front axle carrier -1-
Threaded joint for supporting mount
- Unscrew screw on engine carrier -1-

- Secure front axle carrier

- 8.1 Position > VAS 6931 - engine and gearbox jack with > T40173A - gearbox support under the front axle carrier -1- and align it -Arrows- .
- 8.2 Support the front axle using > VAS 6931 - engine and gearbox jack and secure the front axle carrier -1- with a tension strap.
- 8.3 Unscrew screw -2- , replace it with > T40327 - locating pin and tighten > T40327 - locating pin to 20 Nm.
- 8.4
Repeat procedure for screws -3 to 5-
one after the other.

You will need a second mechanic to help you with this step.
- Remove front axle
Rear screw on front axle carrier
- 9.1 Unscrew rear screws on front axle carrier -2- .
- 9.2 Lower the front axle -1- on > VAS 6931 - engine and gearbox jack , getting another person to help to guide it down.
- 9.3 Remove front axle -1- from > VAS 6931 - engine and gearbox jack with the help of another person and set it down carefully.
