Installing Front Axle

Information 

You will need a second mechanic to help you with this step.

1. Install front axle

   Fitting front axle 

   1. 1.1  Replace screws on front axle carrier -2 to 6-  and have new screws ready.
   2. 1.2  Position front axle -1-  on > VAS 6931 - engine and gearbox jack  with the help of another person.
   3. 1.3  Connect universal joint for steering column to the power-steering gear.
   4. 1.4  Move front axle -1-  into installation position and screw in rear screws on the front axle carrier -2-  by hand.
   5. 1.5  Unscrew > T40327 - locating pin  at the position of screw -3-  , replace it with screw -3-  and tighten screw -3-  .

      > Initial tightening torque 115 Nm (84.8 ftlb.) 

      > Final tightening torque + 90° 

   6. 1.6  Repeat the steps one after the other in diagonally  opposite sequence for screws -4 to 6-  .

      > Initial tightening torque 115 Nm (84.8 ftlb.) 

      > Final tightening torque + 90° 

   7. 1.7  Tighten new screws on front axle carrier -2-  .

      > Initial tightening torque 130 Nm (95.9 ftlb.) 

      > Final tightening torque + 180° 

2. Screws in and tighten screw on engine carrier

   > Initial tightening 90 Nm (66.4 ftlb.) 

   > Final tightening + 90°

3. Only for vehicles with supporting mounts: 

   Screw in and tighten screws securing supporting mount to front axle carrier

   > Torque 20 Nm (14.8 ftlb.)

   Threaded joint for supporting mount 

4. Connect electric plug connections to antennas -1 and 2-  .

   Electric plug connections for engine mount 

   1. 4.1  Connect and lock electric plug connections -2-  .
   2. 4.2  Attach electric plug connection -1-  in holder and connect and lock it.
5. Fit line bracket

   Wiring holder 

   1. 5.1  Move line bracket -1-  into installation position, making sure that the electric wiring harness -3-  is positioned correctly.
   2. 5.2  Screw in and tighten screw of line holder -2-  .

      > Tightening torque 8 Nm (5.9 ftlb.) 

6. Clip in clips -1 and 2-  on front axle carrier.

7. Fit electric wire harness for power steering

   Electric plug connections for power-steering gear 

   1. 7.1  Move electric wire harness for power steering -1-  into installation position.
   2. 7.2  Connect and lock electric plug connections of power steering -2 and 3-  .
   3. 7.3  Clip in line clip -4-  .
8. Install front side member

   Longitudinal member 

   1. 8.1  Position longitudinal member
   2. 8.2  Screw in screw securing lock carrier to longitudinal member -5-  .
   3. 8.3  Screw in screws -6-  .
   4. 8.4  Position slide -4-  .
   5. 8.5  Screw in screws -2-  .
   6. 8.6  Screw in screw -3-  .
   7. 8.7  Tighten screws.
      1. 8.7.1  Tighten screws securing longitudinal member to the body -2-  .

         > Tightening torque 10 Nm (7.4 ftlb.) 

      2. 8.7.2  Tighten screws securing longitudinal member to the body -6-  .

         > Tightening torque 10 Nm (7.4 ftlb.) 

      3. 8.7.3  Tighten screw securing longitudinal member to lock support panel -5-  .

         > Tightening torque 23 Nm (17 ftlb.) 

      4. 8.7.4  Tighten screw securing slide to longitudinal member -3-  .

         > Tightening torque 25 Nm (18.4 ftlb.)
