Replacing The Battery

Information 

The PIWIS Tester  instructions take precedence since the description may be different with later Tester releases.

The procedure described here has been structured in general terms. Different text or additional information may appear on the PIWIS Tester. 

Information 

The lithium-ion battery must  be charged with a charge voltage of 14.4 volts.

Before charging the battery, check setting parameters of the charger and change them if necessary. Follow the operating instructions for the charger to do this.

Charge lithium-ion battery until the charging current is < 5 A.

Use >VAS 5908 - battery charger 90 A. 

Information 

If the Gateway  control unit is programmed, ensure a charging voltage of 14.0 - 14.2 V  at the Gateway control unit. Adjust the charger's voltage if necessary. When programming is complete, reset the charger's voltage.

Information 

A new lithium-ion battery may be supplied with an open protection relay.

The protection relay must be closed before teaching the battery.

To close the protection relay, connect a backup battery with a voltage of 11 V - 14.8 V for at least 30 seconds or connect a charger in backup mode. The protection relay closes (short clicking sound can be heard in the lithium-ion battery).

Lithium-ion battery, manufacturer LG  , continue with Step  1.

Lithium-ion battery, manufacturer A123  , continue with Step  2.

AGM  battery, continue with Step  3.

  1. Fit crash pad on new battery.

    2. 1.2 Pull protective film for adhesive film off the crash pad.
    3. 1.3 Position crash pad, stick it on and press on firmly.

    Only for C02 and C36 

  2. Affix supplied sticker/warning in the same way as on the old battery.
    1. 2.1 Clean bonding area.
    2. 2.2 Remove protective film from sticker/warning.
    3. 2.3 Position sticker/warning, stick it on and press on firmly.

  3. Install new battery.

  4. Connect the Tester to the vehicle and start it. Switch on ignition.
  5. Select the vehicle type if necessary.
  6. Select the Gateway  control unit in the Overview.  Press F12 to continue. The message "Create Vehicle Analysis Log (VAL)?" appears. Press F11 to continue.
  7. Select Maintenance/repairs. 
  8. Battery replacement  must be selected. Press F12 to continue.
  9. Perform procedure in accordance with menu guidance. Read and follow the instructions and information on the Tester.
  10. Read out all fault memories  and erase them if necessary.
  11. Exit the diagnostic application. Switch off ignition. Disconnect the Tester.
  12. Charge the battery.

A replacement lithium-ion battery is supplied with a state of charge of 30%.
