Removing Automatic Transmission

WARNING: Danger of objects or loads falling down 
  • Risk of squashing or crushing 

    → Secure components to prevent them from falling down.

  1. Have suitable stoppers ready for closing off the line connections.
  2. Unscrew screws on heat shield -2-  and remove heat shield -1-  .

    WARNING: Hot fluid 
    • Danger of scalding 

      → Avoid contact with hot fluid.

      → Wear personal protective gear.

  3. Disconnect additional coolant pump at the left

    1. 3.1  Release and disconnect electric plug connection for additional coolant pump -2-  .
    2. 3.2  Unscrew screws on additional coolant pump holder -3-  .
    3. 3.3  Loosen spring band clamp -4-  using > VAS 6890 - spring band clamps pliers  .
    4. 3.4  Disconnect coolant hose -5-  from coolant pipe -6-  .
    5. 3.5  Close off line connections with stoppers.
    6. 3.6  Set additional coolant pump -1-  aside.
    WARNING: Hot fluid
    • Danger of scalding

      → Avoid contact with hot fluid.

      → Wear personal protective gear.

  4. Disconnect coolant line.

    1. 4.1  Loosen spring band clamp -1-  using > VAS 6890 - spring band clamps pliers  .
    2. 4.2  Disconnect coolant hose -2-  from coolant pipe -3-  .
    3. 4.3  Close off line connections with stoppers.
  5. Disconnect coolant hose

    1. 5.1  Loosen spring band clamp -2-  using > VAS 6890 - spring band clamps pliers  .
    2. 5.2  Pull coolant hose -1-  off the coolant pipe.
    3. 5.3  Close off line connections with stoppers.
  6. Coolant line
  7. Remove coolant pipe -1-  .

    1. 7.1  Loosen spring band clamp -2-  using > VAS 6890 - spring band clamp pliers  and pull coolant hose -3-  off the coolant pipe -1-  .
      1. 7.1.1  Close off line connections with stoppers.
    2. 7.2  Unscrew screws for coolant pipe -4-  .
    3. 7.3  Remove coolant pipe -1-  .
  8. Unscrew screws for automatic transmission at the top -2-and-3-  .

  9. Hybrid only: 

    Release and disconnect electric plug connection on pressure adjuster for clutch -1-  .

  10. Disconnect electric wire harness -3-  .

    1. 10.1  Release and disconnect electric plug connection -1-  .
    2. 10.2  Unclip line clips -2-  and set electric wire harness -3-  aside.
  11. Disconnect electric wire harness on automatic transmission -1-  .

    1. 11.1  Release and disconnect electric plug connections on automatic transmission -2 and 3-  .
    2. 11.2  Release and disconnect electric plug connection -5-  .
    3. 11.3  Unclip clips -4-  on electric wire harness for automatic transmission.
    4. 11.4  Move electric wire harness for automatic transmission -1-  aside.

      Information 

    To make it easier to turn the engine, the drive belts can be removed from the generator and air-conditioning compressor.

    > Removing and installing drive belt (V8 biturbo) 

  12. Unscrew drive plate screws

    1. 12.1  Remove cap -2-  .
    2. 12.2  Unscrew drive plate screw -1-  .
    3. 12.3  Turn the engine further and repeat the procedure on all drive plate screws -1-  .
  13. Unscrew and remove screws -4-  .

    1. 13.1  Unscrew screws -4-  on automatic transmission using a commercially available 3/8-inch flexible-head socket (a/f 16).
  14. Unscrew screws for automatic transmission -5 to 7-  .

    Automatic transmission on transmission jack (shown as an example)

    1. 15.1  > T40173A - Gearbox support  must be set up on > VAS 6931 - engine and gearbox Jack-2-  .
    2. 15.2  > VAS 6931 - Engine and gearbox jack-2-  must be positioned under the automatic transmission -1-  and fitted on the automatic transmission -1-  .
    3. 15.3  Secure automatic transmission -1-  on > VAS 6931 - engine and gearbox jack-2-  using a tension strap.
  16. Support the engine.
  17. Loosen transmission support -1-  .

    Transmission support

    1. 17.1  Unscrew screws on transmission support -2-  .
    2. 17.2  Carefully lower the automatic transmission together with transmission support on > VAS 6931 - engine and gearbox jack  and guide them out of the vehicle.
