Removing Rear Muffler

CAUTION: Hot components 
  • Risk of burns 

    → Let hot components cool down.

    → Wear personal protective gear.

CAUTION: Heavy components 
  • Risk of squashing 

    → Wear personal protective gear.

    → Get someone to help if necessary.

  1. Support the exhaust system at the same height as the centre silencer using >VAS 6931 - engine and gearbox jack  and secure with a tension strap.
  2. Only for vehicles with sports exhaust system: 

    Release and disconnect electric plug connection -1-  on servo motor for exhaust flap -2-  .

    Information 

    • Due to manufacturing problems, rear mufflers (rear silencers) with non-standard exhaust pipe lengths will be delivered as spare parts during the first 3 - 6 months. 
    • These spare parts must be adapted until such a time as the standard spare parts are introduced. 
    • The cutting positions are marked and the parts must be cut at the centre markings. 
  3. Cut exhaust pipes -1-  .

    Cutting exhaust system pipes

    1. 3.1 Cut exhaust pipes at the marked cutting points -Arrows-  using >V.A.G 1561B - Electric cutter  and >VAS 6780 - body saw. 
  4. Remove rear silencer -1-  with the help of another person.

    Removing rear silencer

    1. 4.1 Unscrew screws on the rear silencer holders -2-  .
    2. 4.2 Guide rear silencer -1-  down and out.
    3. 4.3 Clamps (see Spare Parts Catalogue) are required for installing the new silencer.

    Information 

    The appearance and number of tailpipes may vary, depending on vehicle equipment.

  5. Remove tailpipes -1-  .

    Tailpipes

    1. 5.1 Loosen screw on clamp -3-  .
    2. 5.2 Loosen clamp -2-  .
    3. 5.3 Pull tailpipes -1-  off the rear silencer.
  6. Remove retaining rubbers -1-  from the rear silencer -2-  .

    1. 6.1 Check retaining rubbers for damage and replace them if necessary! 
  7. Only for vehicles with sports exhaust system: Remove exhaust flap actuator.
