Removing Rear Axle

CAUTION: Heavy components 
  • Risk of squashing 
    1. → Wear personal protective gear.
    2. → Get someone to help if necessary.
  1. Only for vehicles with air suspension system: 

    Remove stone guard for valve unit -1-  .

    Stone guard for valve unit

    1. 1.1  Unscrew nuts -2-  and remove stone guard of, valve unit -1-  .
  2. Only for vehicles with air suspension system: 

    Disengage air lines -1-  from the rear axle.

    Clips on air lines

    1. 2.1  Unclip clips on air lines -2-  .
    2. 2.2  Set air lines -1-  aside.
  3. Release and disconnect electric plug connections on servo motor for rear axle steering -1 and 2-  .

  4. Release and disconnect electric plug connection on servo motor for transfer gear -1-  and electric plug connection on angle sensor for headlight beam adjustment -2-  .

  5. Only for vehicles with PDCC: 

    Disconnect PDCC wire harness at the PDCC control unit (observe specified sequence!).

    Electric plug connections for PDCC anti-roll bar

    1. 5.1  Release and disconnect electric plug connections in the sequence -1 to 2-  .
    2. 5.2  Unclip clips -3-  .
  6. Only for vehicles with PDCC: 

    Disconnect electric wire harness for anti-roll bar -1-  by screwing off the nut on the ground line -2-  and unclipping clips -3-  .

  7. Release and disconnect electric plug connection for rear speed sensor -1-

  8. Loosen rear screws on strut.

    1. 8.1  Unscrew rear screws on strut -1 and 2-  .
  9. Disconnect rear shock absorber -1-  .

    Rear spring damper

    1. 9.1  Release and disconnect electric plug connection -2-  .
    2. 9.2  Unscrew screws securing shock absorber to the body -3-  .
  10. Prepare mounting elements -1-  of the > T40173A - Gearbox support  .

    Gearbox support

    1. 10.1  Remove mounting elements -1-  from the > T40173A - Gearbox support  .
    2. 10.2  Turn mounting blocks -2-  180° and re-insert them in the mounting elements -1-  .
    3. 10.3  At the cut-outs in the mounting elements -Arrow-  , drill a hole with a diameter of 8.5 mm in the mounting blocks -2-  using a commercially available drill.
    4. 10.4  Fit the mounting blocks -2-  back into the mounting elements -1-  using screws.
    5. 10.5  Set mounting elements -1-  aside.
  11. Support the rear axle.

    Supporting rear axle

    1. 11.1  > T40173A - Gearbox support  must now be fitted on > VAS 6931 - engine and gearbox jack  .
    2. 11.2  > T40173A - Gearbox support  must be tilted to the rear using the adjusting screw.
    3. 11.3  > VAS 6931 - Engine and gearbox jack  with > T40173A - Gearbox support  must now be positioned under the rear final drive. Then support the rear axle at the rear final drive.

    Information 

    The front fastening points of the strut are also the front fastening points of the rear axle.

  12. Remove strut.

    Strut

    1. 12.1  Unscrew front left screw on the rear axle -1-  and replace it with > T40329 - locating pin  .
    2. 12.2  Unscrew front left screw on the strut -2-  .
    3. 12.3  Remove left section of strut -3-  .
    4. 12.4  > T40329 - locating pin  must be tightened to 20 Nm (15  ftlb.).
    5. 12.5  Unscrew front right screw on the rear axle -4-  and replace it with > T40329 - locating pin  .
    6. 12.6  Unscrew front right screw on the strut -5-  .
    7. 12.7  Remove right section of strut -6-  .
    8. 12.8  > T40329 - locating pin  must be tightened to 20 Nm (15 ftlb.)  .
  13. Fit mounting elements -1-  .

    Mounting element on gearbox support

    1. 13.1  Fit mounting elements -1-  using the threaded bore -2-  on > T40173A - Gearbox support  .
    2. 13.2  > T40173A - Gearbox support  must be tilted forward using the adjusting screw until the mounting blocks are touching the rear of the rear axle. Adjust the height of the > VAS 6931 - transmission and engine jack  to do this if necessary.
    3. 13.3  Secure the rear axle with a tension strap.
  14. Remove rear axle -1-  .

    Removing rear axle

    1. 14.1  Unscrew rear screws on the rear axle -2-  one after the other and replace them with > T40329 - locating pins  .
    2. 14.2  > T40329 - locating pin  must be tightened to 20 Nm (15 ftlb.)  .
    3. 14.3  Lower the rear axle -1-  on > VAS 6931 - engine and gearbox jack  and guide it out of the vehicle.
