Replacing Instrument Cluster

NOTIFICATION 

Voltage drop 

• Irreparable damage to control unit 
• Damage to control unit 
• Fault entries in the control unit 
• Control unit programming/coding is aborted 
• Malfunctions in the control unit, even during programming/coding 
  1. Switch off ignition before disconnecting the control unit.
  2. Make sure that the power supply is not interrupted during programming/coding.
  3. Connect the battery charger with at least > current 90 A  to the vehicle battery.

Information 

Ensure the consistency of a combination of hardware and software versions 

After performing software updates, always make sure that the target software versions are also actually installed on the control units and that the system is therefore ensured.

This also applies in the case of hardware replacement.

Information 

The PIWIS Tester  instructions take precedence since the description may be different with later Tester releases.

The procedure described here has been structured in general terms. Different text or additional information may appear on the PIWIS Tester. 

1. Document the total mileage and fuel level.
2. Connect the Tester to the vehicle and start it. Switch on ignition.
3. Place original remote control in emergency start tray.

4. Select the vehicle type if necessary.
5. Select the Instrument cluster control unit  in the overview. Press F12 to continue. The message "Create Vehicle Analysis Log (VAL)?" appears. Press F11 to continue.
6. Select Maintenance/repairs. 
7. Select Save tank sensor calibration values.  Press F12 to continue and then press F8 to start.
8. Select Control unit replacement.  Press F12 to continue.
9. Read data.  Press F12 to continue and then press F8 to start.
   1. 9.1  The Tester displays the message: Data was read out. Press F12 to continue.
10. Select Save tank sensor calibration values.  Press F12 to continue.
    1. 10.1  The tester displays the message: Fuel tank sensor calibration values stored.
11. Switch off ignition. Replace instrument cluster.

12. Switch on ignition. Select Write data  in the menu (procedure described above). Press F12 to continue and then press F8 to start. The data that was read out is loaded.
13. The Tester displays the message: Data has been written. Press F12 to continue.
14. In the overview,  press F7 to switch to the Additional menu. 

    The message "Create Vehicle Analysis Log (VAL)?" appears. Press F11 to continue.

15. Select Commission component protection.  Follow instructions and procedure. Press F12 to continue.
    1. 15.1  Teach component protection according to menu guidance.
    2. 15.2  Select Gateway  (master) component protection in order to teach it. Press F12 to continue.
    3. 15.3  The tester displays the message: Component protection taught successfully.
16. Select Maintenance of vehicle data.  Press F12 to continue.
17. Check vehicle data and make changes if necessary.

    The required vehicle data can be read out of the PIWIS vehicle information system.

18. Go back to the overview. Press F12 to continue.
19. Select the Instrument cluster  control unit in the overview. Press F12 to continue.
20. Select Coding/programming. 
21. Select Automatic coding.  Press F12 to continue.
    1. 21.1  The tester displays the message: Coding successfully performed.
22. Select Maintenance/repairs. 
23. Select Restore tank sensor calibration values.  Press F12 to continue.
    1. 23.1  Read the information and warnings on the Tester. Press F12 to continue and then press F8 to start.
    2. 23.2  The fuel-level sensor values are restored. Press F12 to continue.

    Information 

    The total mileage can only be written once in the instrument cluster. It cannot be changed even if the counter is below 1, 000 km (620 mls). An incorrect total mileage cannot be corrected.  Make sure that the total mileage is entered correctly.

24. Select Set total mileage.  Press F12 to continue.
    1. 24.1  Read the warnings displayed on the Tester. Press F12 to continue.
    2. 24.2  Select Total mileage. Enter the value that was read out in Step 1  and press F8 to write data. Press F12 to continue.
25. Select Write maintenance interval.  Press F12 to continue.
    1. 25.1  Read and follow the instructions and information on the Tester. Press F12 to continue.
    2. 25.2  Look up and enter the maintenance values from the customer service booklet. Press F12 to continue
26. Switch back to the overview.  Start the Additional menu  by pressing F7.
27. Select Function enable.  Press F12 to continue.
    1. 27.1  Select Display enabled functions.  Press F12 to continue.
    2. 27.2  The enabled functions are displayed. Read the warnings displayed on the Tester:
    3. 27.3  Select Restore enabled function.  Press F12 to continue.
    4. 27.4  Read the warnings displayed on the Tester. Press F12 to continue.
    5. 27.5  The tester displays the message: Restore successful.  Press F12 to continue.
28. Go back to the overview. 
29. Calibrate combination sensor  .

30. If installed: Calibrate rear spoiler.

    > 667455 REPLACING CONTROL UNIT FOR REAR SPOILER

31. If installed: Calibrate panoramic roof.

32. Go back to the overview.
33. Read out all fault memories,  process and delete existing faults if necessary.
34. Exit the diagnostic application. Switch off ignition. Disconnect the Tester from the vehicle.
35. Check the function of the instrument cluster and fuel level gauge during the test drive.
