Replace Front-End Electronics Control Unit
NOTIFICATION
Voltage drop
- Irreparable damage to control unit
- Damage to control unit
- Fault entries in the control unit
- Control unit programming/coding is aborted
- Malfunctions in the control unit, even during programming
→ Switch off ignition before disconnecting the control unit.
→ Make sure that the power supply is not interrupted during programming/coding.
→ Connect the battery charger with at least > current 90 A to the vehicle battery.
Information
If Home Link/garage door opener is installed on the vehicle, the garage door remote controls must be re-taught to the vehicle after replacing the front-end electronics. See the relevant Driver's Manual.
The customer needs to have the garage door remote controls for this purpose.
If the front-end electronics coding/programming cannot be read out, the customer-specific settings must be queried or entered together with the customer.

Ensure the consistency of a combination of hardware and software versions
After performing software updates, always make sure that the target software versions are also actually installed on the control units and that the system is therefore ensured.
This also applies in the case of hardware replacement.

The procedure described here has been structured in general terms. Different text or additional information may appear on the PIWIS Tester .
- In the Display and operator control unit
, call up the menu Car, Control, Vehicle
.
Read out the customer-specific settings in the Locking Mechanism, Light & Visibility, Seat adjustment and Steering wheel button menus and document them.
- Switch off ignition.
- Replacing control unit for front-end electronics.

- Connect the Tester to the vehicle and start it. Switch on ignition.
- Place original remote control in emergency start tray.
Emergency start tray
- In the Overview , press F7 to start the Additional menu. The message "Create Vehicle Analysis Log (VAL)?" appears. Press F11 to continue.
- Select the Commission component protection
function in the Additional menu
. Press F12 to continue.
- 7.1 Read and follow the instructions and information on the Tester.
- 7.2 Teach component protection according to menu guidance.
- 7.3 The tester displays the message: Component protection taught successfully.
- Go back to the Overview .
- Front-end electronics control unit must be selected.
- Select Coding/programming .
- Select Automatic coding
. Press F12 to continue.
- 11.1 The tester displays the message: Coding successfully performed.
- Perform ignition reset.
- 12.1 Switch off ignition.
- 12.2 Disconnect the VCI module and PIWIS tester from the vehicle.
- 12.3 Switch off and disconnect the battery charger.
- 12.4 Close lids and doors.
- 12.5 Lock the vehicle.
- 12.6 Wait 2 minutes. (parking brake LED goes off).
- 12.7 Unlock the vehicle and connect VCI module and PIWIS tester.
- 12.8 Connect a charger.
- 12.9 Switch on ignition.
- Select Drive links checks .
- Select Front-end electronics control unit .
- Select Drive links checks .
- Reset to factory settings must be selected. Press F12 to continue.
- Select Maintenance/repairs .
- Teach headlight beam
adjustment must be selected. Press F12 to continue.
- 18.1 Read and follow the information and instructions on the tester. Press F12 to continue and then press F8 to start. If installed: Teach electric steering column adjustment.
- Teach steering column adjustment
must be selected. Press F12 to continue.
- 19.1 Read and follow the information and instructions on the tester. Press F12 to continue and then press F8 to start.
- Teach combination sensor.
- 20.1 Select the Airbag control unit in the Overview . Press F12 to continue.
- 20.2 Select Maintenance/repairs .
- 20.3 Calibrate combination sensor must be selected. Press F12 to continue.
- 20.4 Read and follow the warnings and instructions on the Tester.
- Go back to the Overview .
- Read out all fault memories , process and delete existing faults if necessary.
- Exit the diagnostic application, switch off ignition, disconnect the Tester from the vehicle.
- In the Display and operator control unit
, call up the menu Car, Control, Vehicle
.
In the Locking Mechanism, Light and Visibility, Seat adjustment and Steering wheel button menu, select and reset the customer-specific settings you read out earlier.
