Removing Turbocharger (VTG)

WARNING: Hot fluid 
  • Danger of scalding 
    • → Let the fluid cool down.

NOTIFICATION 

Mixing fluids 

Information 

  1. Unscrew fastening nuts -1  - and unscrew studs -2  - on the turbocharger/exhaust manifold flange -3  -.

  2. Remove exhaust manifold -1  -.
    1. 2.1 Unscrew fastening screws -2  - securing exhaust manifold to cylinder head.
    2. 2.2 Remove exhaust manifold -1  - by pulling it downwards.

  3. Release vacuum line for brake booster -1  - on the underbody and pull it off.
    1. 3.1 Open both connection points -Arrow  - and pull off vacuum line for brake booster -1  -.
    2. 3.2 Check O-rings and replace them if necessary.

  4. Release and disconnect electric plug connection -1  - for VTG adjuster -2  -.

  5. Disconnect intake pipe -1  - on the turbocharger -2  -.
    1. 5.1 Unscrew and remove fastening screws -3  -.
    2. 5.2 Pull intake pipe -1  - off the turbocharger -2  -.
    3. 5.3 Replace O-ring on the intake pipe.

  6. Disconnect coolant line -1  - on the turbocharger -2  -.
    1. 6.1 Unscrew and remove fastening screws -3  -.
    2. 6.2 Pull off coolant line -1  - using a suitable tool.
    3. 6.3 Catch escaping coolant.
    4. 6.4 Replace all O-rings on the coolant line -1  -.
    5. 6.5 Close off opening and connection using suitable stoppers.

  7. Loosen V-clip securing -2  - catalytic converter -3  - to turbocharger -4  -.
    1. 7.1 Loosen fastening screw -1  - and open V-clip -2  -.
    2. 7.2 Remove turbocharger -4  - from catalytic converter -3  -.
    3. 7.3 Replace gasket.

  8. Unscrew exhaust temperature sensor for turbocharger -1  -.

    Make sure not to twist the electric line. Follow the routing of the electric line and expose it if necessary.

  9. Secure the turbocharger to prevent it from falling down.

    Vehicle interior 

  10. Disconnect vacuum hose -1  - for the wastegate vacuum modulator (VTG) -2  -.

  11. Unscrew fastening nuts -1  - for heat shield -3  - at the holder -2  -.

  12. Unscrew and remove fastening screws -3  -.
  13. Disconnect turbocharger coolant line -1  - from coolant distributor housing -2  -.

  14. Remove turbocharger coolant line -1  - from the coolant distributor housing.

    The turbocharger coolant line  -1  - is removed together with the turbocharger. 

    1. 14.1 Unscrew fastening screw -2  - and pull coolant line -1  - off the coolant distributor housing.
    2. 14.2 Catch escaping coolant.
    3. 14.3 Close off openings and connections using suitable stoppers.

  15. Remove oil pipe -1  - from the turbocharger.
    1. 15.1 Unscrew fastening screw -2  - using > VAS 6959 - Torx screwdriver insert, T30  .
    2. 15.2 Carefully pull oil pipe -1  - off the turbocharger.

      If the oil pipe is stiff, wrap assembly tape around it at a suitable position. Carefully grip the oil pipe at the wrapped position using pliers and remove it from the turbocharger. Make sure not to damage the oil pipe  .

    3. 15.3 Collect accumulated engine oil.
    4. 15.4 Close off opening and connection using suitable stoppers.

    On vehicles with Venturi turbocharger connection: 

  16. Disconnect tank vent line -1  - at the turbocharger -2  -.
    1. 16.1 Undo screw -3  - and pull tank vent valve -1  - off the turbocharger -2  -.
    2. 16.2 Close off openings and connections using suitable stoppers.

  17. Remove the turbocharger by pulling it downwards.
    1. 17.1 Replace gasket on the exhaust manifold flange.
    2. 17.2 Replace gasket on the catalytic converter flange.
    3. 17.3 Replace gasket on the turbocharger/exhaust manifold flange.
