Removing Rear Spring Strut

Information 

• The rear brake calliper must be removed so that the brake hose does not become strained or damaged on wheel suspension parts during assembly work. 
• Do not open the brake hydraulic system (brake line remains connected). 

The rear spring strut can only be removed and installed together with the wheel bearing housing.

Information 

Never use power tools (impact bolter) for loosening and securing the brake calliper on the wheel bearing housing.

1. Remove rear brake calliper with line bracket.
   1. 1.1  Unscrew fastening screws -arrows-  .

   2. 1.2  Release and unplug electric plug connection for electric parking brake (EPB) -1-  and unclip it from the cable retainer -2-  .

   3. 1.3  Release and disconnect electric plug connection for rpm sensor -3-  .
   4. 1.4  Unscrew and remove fastening screw -4-  securing holder to wheel bearing housing.
   5. 1.5  Remove the brake calliper together with the holder from the wheel bearing housing and hang it at a suitable position, e.g. using a piece of wire, in the wheel housing. Make sure that the brake pressure line is not strained.

      If the edge of the brake disc is protruding at the outer diameter, first reset the brake pads slightly and evenly

   1. 2.1  Screw off fastening nuts -1-  .
   2. 2.2  Pull off tie rod -2-  using a puller > 9560 - Press-out tool-4-  on the wheel bearing housing.
   3. 2.3  Pull off lower trailing arm -3-  using a puller > 9560 - Press-out tool-4-  on the wheel bearing housing.
3. Loosen anti-roll bar.

   1. 3.1  Screw off fastening nut -1-  and pull off connecting link -2-  on the anti-roll bar.
4. Remove the drive shaft at the wheel bearing housing.

   1. 4.1  Carefully press out the drive shaft peg using > VAS 6926 - Puller set  until you can move the shaft with your hand.

      To prevent damage to the drive shaft, slide a protective hose over the drive shaft.

5. Disconnect electric plug connection on upper spring strut.
   1. 5.1  Unclip electric plug connection -1-  from the holder -2-  by pulling it upwards -A-.

   2. 5.2  Release electric plug connection -1-  (-A-)  and disconnect connector -2-  (-B-).

6. 6.  Loosen and remove upper spring strut. Support the drive shaft when guiding it out of the wheel bearing housing and tie it up immediately at a suitable place. Get another person to help you with this.
   1. 6.1  Screw three fastening nuts -1-  off the spring-strut mount.

   2. 6.2  Remove the spring strut together with the wheel bearing housing from the vehicle by pulling it downwards.

      On vehicles with PCCB brake discs, make sure not to damage the brake disc during removal.

      After removing the drive shaft from the wheel bearing housing, tie it up immediately at a suitable place.

7. Loosen clamped connection between the spring strut and wheel bearing housing. Remove spring strut from wheel bearing housing.
   1. 7.1  Screw off fastening nut -5-  and pull out connecting link -3-  .

   2. 7.2  Unscrew fastening nut -6-  pull out clamping screw -2-  and pull spring strut -1-  out of the wheel bearing housing -4-  .
