Installing Rear Spring Strut

  1. Insert spring strut into wheel bearing housing and fit it into the vehicle.
    1. 1.1  Insert spring strut -1-  into the wheel bearing housing -2-  Also insert the guide plate on the spring strut into the clamping groove and push it in as far as it will go -arrow-  .

    2. 1.2  Insert connecting link -3-  and screw on and tighten fastening nut -5-  .

      Counter at the hexagon wrench face of the connecting link -arrow-  when tightening the fastening nut. > Initial tightening 50 Nm (36.9 ftlb.)  > Final tightening + 180° 

    3. 1.3  Insert clamping screw and screw on and tighten fastening nut. > Initial tightening 50 Nm (36.9 ftlb.)  > Final tightening + 180° 
    4. 1.4  Move the spring strut together with the wheel bearing housing into installation position in the wheel housing and screw on and tighten the three fastening nuts -1-  on the upper spring-strut mount. > Tightening torque 33 Nm (24.3 ftlb.)

  2. Connect electrical connector on upper spring strut.

    1. 2.1  Plug in electric plug connection in selector support -1-  and lock it
    2. 2.2  Lock the electric plug connection in the holder -2-  so that the ring groove in the middle of the holder engages -arrow  -.
  3. Fit drive shaft on the wheel bearing housing.
    1. 3.1  Check the drive shaft.

      Check the following before installing the drive shaft:

      Check inner/outer bellows and replace if necessary.

      > 422855 REPLACING DRIVE SHAFT BELLOWS  - article on "Replacing"

      Grease the drive shaft toothing with Optimoly HT. 

    2. 3.2  Insert the drive shaft into the wheel bearing housing and screw on the axle nuts (securing the drive-shaft bolts to the wheel bearing housing).

      Information 

      Following installation, seal the threaded joint securing tie rod to wheel bearing housing with wax as shown in -Illustration-  . Use Pfinder AP14/4 for this (see PIWIS Parts Information - PET)

  4. Install tie rod and lower trailing arm.

    1. 4.1  Fit lower trailing arm -3-  and tie rod -2-  on the wheel bearing housing and screw on and tighten fastening nuts.

      Fastening nut for lower trailing arm: > Tightening torque 120 Nm (88.5 ftlb.) 

      Fastening nut for tie rod: > Tightening torque 85 Nm (62.7 ftlb.) 

  5. Securing anti-roll bar
    1. 5.1  Insert connecting link -2-  into the anti-roll bar and screw on and tighten fastening nut -1-  > Initial tightening 40 Nm (29.5 ftlb.)  > Final tightening+ 30°

  6. Install rear brake calliper with line bracket.
    1. 6.1  Fit brake calliper together with the holder and screw in and tighten new brake calliper fastening screws -Arrows-  , > Tightening torque 85 Nm (62.7 ftlb.)

    2. 6.2  Screw in and tighten fastening screw -4-  securing holder to wheel bearing housing. > Tightening torque 10 Nm (7.5 ftlb.)

    3. 6.3  Plug in and lock electric plug connection on the rpm sensor -3-  .
    4. 6.4  Plug in and lock electric plug connection for electric parking brake (EPB) -1-  and clip the line into the cable retainer -2-  .
