Installing Rear Wheel Bearing

CAUTION: Hot components
  • Risk of burns

    → Let hot components cool down.

    → Wear personal protective gear.

WARNING: Mechanical, hydraulic or pneumatic press
  • Risk of squashing

    → Read specific safety information for the press.

    → Check that the press is working perfectly before use, particularly the safety components.

  1. Clean the wheel bearing and bore in the wheel bearing housing. Remove any edges with a polishing cloth.
  2. Heat the wheel bearing housing -1-  using a hotplate -2-  to > Temperature 80°C

    Information 

    • The multiple seal on the wheel bearing must not come into contact with highly magnetic tools. 
    • Installing the wheel bearing: The magnetic side must be facing the speed sensor (inside of wheel bearing housing). 
    • Use the > T10473 - sensor gauge or a paper clip to find the magnetic side. 
  3. Press in wheel bearing  at the correct position (due to engine-speed signal).

    1. 3.1  Insert a suitable ram in the workshop press.
    2. 3.2  Position pipe T10230/14 from > T10230/14-16 - supplementary set  under the workshop press and fit the wheel bearing housing flat on top. Insert wheel bearing straight and at the correct position.
    3. 3.3  Position pressure piece T10205/10 from > T10205 - attachments  flush on the wheel bearing -side arrows-  .
    4. 3.4  Carefully press wheel bearing in as far as it will go -arrow-  (check pressure gauge! When the pressure increases rapidly the wheel bearing is in installation position).

  4. Fit cover of wheel bearing housing (water drains pointing downwards).

    Removing cover from wheel bearing housing

    1. 4.1  Tighten fastening screws -2-  > Tightening torque 37 Nm (27 ftlb.) 
  5. Press in wheel hub.

    1. > 9694/3 - Press-on sleeve 
    2. > 30-205 - Pressure niece 
    3. Pressure piece T10205/10 from > T10205 - attachments 
    1. 5.1  Position press-on sleeve 9694/3 -1-  together with the inserted pressure piece 30-205 -2-  under the workshop press.
    2. 5.2  Fit wheel bearing housing and wheel bearing inner race flat on press-on sleeve 9694/3 -1-  (or on pressure piece 30-205) -2-  .

      Centre the wheel bearing inner race on pressure piece 30-205 -2-  .

    3. 5.3  Fit pressure piece T10205/10 -3-  flat on the wheel hub. Ensure that the wheel bearing inner race is positioned flat and centrally on the press-on sleeve 9694/3 -1-  (or on the pressure piece 30-205) -2-  .
    4. 5.4  Carefully press in the wheel hub until the pressure increases (check pressure gauge) -direction arrow-  .
