Removing Front Wheel Bearing

Information 

The wheel bearing must not come into contact with magnetic objects (e.g. magnetic screwdriver, magnet).

Component overview of front-axle wheel bearing

  1. Wheel hub  Carry out a close visual inspection to make sure the wheel bearing is fitted correctly. No grooving, scoring or similar deformation is permitted!
  2. M8 fastening screws 
  3. Cover 
  4. Wheel bearing  Cannot be re-used following removal. Do not press on the wheel bearing inner race during installation (pressing in). Insert new wheel bearing with the magnetic multiple ring facing the inside of the wheel bearing housing (towards the speed sensor). Check the magnetic side using a > T10473-test card  or a paper clip. Do not use magnets or screwdrivers to check!
  5. Wheel bearing housing  Carry out a close visual inspection to make sure that the wheel bearing is fitted correctly. No grooving, scoring or similar deformation is permitted!
  1. Press out the wheel hub.
    1. 1.1  Insert the wheel bearing housing, with the wheel hub -3-  facing down, into the hydraulic press. Use > VW457 - Holding rails -1-  as a countering device.

      Ensure that the cover of the wheel bearing with the circular areas is lying flat on the holding rails -1-  (-arrows-)  and that the wheel hub -3-  can extend downwards freely.

    2. 1.2  Press the -3-  wheel hub out carefully using a > P297a - Pressing-gut mandrel -2-  . Hold the wheel hub -3-  from below to prevent if falling out (second fitter required).
  2. Remove cover -1-  from the wheel bearing housing.

    1. 2.1  Unscrew fastening screws -2-  .
  3. Press out the wheel bearing.
    1. 3.1  Place pipe T10205/5-2  - from tool set > T10205 - Attachments  under the workshop press and fit the wheel bearing housing go top.

      > 9694/3 - Press-on sleeve -1-  must be centred on the wheel bearing.

    2. 3.2  Carefully press cut the wheel bearing -direction arrow-  .

      Information 

      To press the bearing inner race off the old wheel bearing, pull the bearing inner race several millimeters off the wheel hub using a two-claw puller so that the separating device can be fitted. To do this, use a two-claw puller together with a > VW433 - Pressure piece  , for example.

  4. Press wheel bearing inner race off the wheel hub.
    1. 4.1  > VAS 6961 - Separating device -2-  under the wheel bearing inner race -1-  and tighten evenly using open-ended wrench -4-  Take care not to damage the wheel hub -3-  .

    2. 4.2  Using the > VW454 - Pressure piece-arrow-  carefully push the wheel hub through the wheel bearing inner race -1-  . Hold the wheel hub from below (second mechanic required).
