Removing Crankshaft Sealing Ring

To protect sensitive engine components from damage, suitable trays must be used.
To prevent engine damage, always ensure absolute cleanliness.

Prepare crankshaft flange on flywheel side for removing the crankshaft sealing ring -1- .
1. 1.1 Carefully remove any small edges and burrs on the chamfer of the crankshaft flange using a suitable tool, e.g. an oilstone.
  WARNING:
  Caustic fluids
  - Danger of chemical burns
    
    → Wear personal protective gear.
    
    → Ensure that there is good ventilation.
    
    → Avoid contact with caustic fluid.
    
    → If you do come into contact, wash off immediately with plenty of warm water and contact a doctor if necessary.
  1. 1.1.1 Then, carefully remove metal chips and dirt using a clean, lint-free cloth soaked in solvent naphtha or acetone.
  CAUTION:
  The crankshaft flange can be damaged if not cleaned correctly.
  - Leaks
    
    → Never use an abrasive or polishing cloth or brushes with metal bristles.
    
    → Follow cleaning instructions.
2. 1.2 If there are corroded spots on the crankshaft flange, remove them only using suitable aids, e.g. a metal-polishing cloth or metal-polishing pad.

Spot-drill holes in the crankshaft sealing ring -1- at two directly opposite positions -arrows- using a greased drill bit (2 mm) -2- .

NOTIFICATION

Drilling work on crankshaft sealing ring
- Risk of engine damage caused by drilling chips
- Risk of damage to the crankcase
- Do not apply pressure while drilling
  - → Carefully remove drill chips
  - → Drill carefully
Carefully remove all drilling chips.
Pull out crankshaft sealing ring (two alternative methods). Method 1:
1. 4.1 > T40019 - Oil seal extractor with extractor tip -1- must be screwed alternately into the bores -arrow- . Then pull the crankshaft sealing ring out evenly.

Pull out crankshaft sealing ring (two alternative methods). Method 2:
1. 5.1 Screw two tapping screws into the bores -arrows- .
2. 5.2 Pull crankshaft sealing ring out alternately using > VAS 6965 - Puller set at the tapping screws.

Check crankshaft flange and crankcase bore for damage.
Remove any dirt or corroded spots using suitable aids, e.g. a metal-polishing cloth or metal-polishing pad.

1. 7.1 Then, carefully remove grease from the flange and crankcase bore using a clean, lint-free cloth soaked in solvent naphtha or acetone.
  Information
  
  Cleaning agents and cleaning agent vapours can damage the crankshaft sealing ring, particularly its sealing lip, which can result in leaks.
2. 7.2 Allow to dry off for at least 3 minutes.
