Installing Crankshaft Sealing Ring

- Prepare insertion tool for fitting the new crankshaft sealing ring.
- 1.1 If not already installed, install > 9699/3 - assembly aid
in > 9699 - insertion tool

- 1.1.1 Unscrew hexagon-head bolt from > 9699 - insertion tool and remove assembly aid.
- 1.1.2 > 9699/3 - Assembly aid must be inserted into > 9699 - insertion tool .
- 1.1.3 > 9699/3 - Assembly aid must be secured in > 9699 - insertion tool using a hexagon-head bolt.
- 1.2 Remove any small burred spots or damaged areas on the insertion tool using a suitable tool, e.g. a needle-point file.
- 1.2.1 Then clean off insertion tool using a suitable tool, e.g. an oilstone or polishing cloth.WARNING: Caustic fluids

- → Wear personal protective gear.
- → Ensure that there is good ventilation.
- → Avoid contact with caustic fluid.
- → If you do come into contact, wash off immediately with plenty of warm water and contact a doctor if necessary.

- 1.2.2 Remove dirt on the insertion tool using a clean, lint-free cloth soaked in solvent naphtha or acetone.
- 1.2.1 Then clean off insertion tool using a suitable tool, e.g. an oilstone or polishing cloth.
- 1.3 Fit support sleeve -1-
on insertion tool.
- 1.3.1 Fit support sleeve -1- on > 9699/3 - assembly aid with the collar facing out.
- 1.3.2 Unscrew hexagon-head bolt as far as required until the support sleeve -1- is flush -arrow- with the > 9699/3 - assembly aid .

CAUTION: Damage to the sealing lip.- Leaks
- → The crankshaft flange and tools must be perfectly clean and free of grease.
- → The sealing ring must be fitted dry, i.e. no oil, grease or other lubricants can be used.
- → The crankcase bore must not be oiled.
- → The sealing ring can only be positioned on the assembly tool using the supporting sleeve.
- → The new crankshaft sealing ring (PTFE) is supplied on a supporting sleeve as a spare part.
- → Do not remove the sealing ring from the supporting sleeve.
- 1.1 If not already installed, install > 9699/3 - assembly aid

- Slide new crankshaft sealing ring -1-
onto support sleeve -2-
on the > 9699/3 - assembly aid
of the insertion tool.

- Fit insertion tool on crankshaft flange.
- 3.1 Fit insertion tool on the crankshaft flange and screw in cheese head bolts -arrows- on the crankshaft flange.
- 3.2 Tighten cheese head bolts -arrows- on the insertion tool.
Securing insertion tool to crankshaft flange
Information
After pulling in the crankshaft sealing ring, leave the insertion tool fitted on the flange of the crankshaft for about 3 minutes so that the sealing lip of the crankshaft sealing ring can settle into position.
- Pull in new crankshaft sealing ring.
- 4.1 Screw hexagon-head bolt in clockwise as far as it will go, thereby pulling the new crankshaft sealing ring into the crankshaft housing. > Inserting crankshaft sealing ring
Inserting crankshaft sealing ring
Information
After pulling in the crankshaft sealing ring, leave the insertion tool fitted on the flange of the crankshaft for about 3 minutes so that the sealing lip of the crankshaft sealing ring can settle into position.
- Remove insertion tool about 3 minutes at the earliest after inserting the crankshaft sealing ring.
- 5.1 Unscrew hexagon-head bolt anti-clockwise until the cheese head bolts are still just visible.
- 5.2 Unscrew both cheese head bolts from the crankshaft flange and remove insertion tool.
- 5.3 Leave support sleeve -1-
on the > 9699/3 - assembly aid
to protect the edges of the tool.
To replace the support sleeve -1- if necessary, carefully lever it off at the ventilation bore -arrow- using a suitable tool.
Support sleeve on
- Check that the crankshaft sealing ring is seated correctly.
- 6.1 Measure the distance from the edge of the crankshaft flange to the crankshaft sealing ring at four positions offset by 90° all around the crankshaft flange.
The distance between the edge of the crankshaft flange and the crankshaft sealing ring must be > Dimension 7 mm +/- 0.3 mm .
