Assembling Crankshaft

NOTIFICATION 

Dirt and contamination 

  1. Assemble new connecting-rod bearing shells on the crankshaft according to the marking.

    Marking for bearing shell allocation on the crankshaft

    1. Position of support and main bearing shells on crankshaft (support bearings not numbered!)
    2. Series of letters on support and main bearing shells
    3. Position of connecting-rod bearing shells
    4. Series of letters on connecting-rod bearing shells
    1. SL  Supporting mount
    2. HL  Main bearing
    3. PL  Connecting-rod bearing
    4. Red bearing shell ("thin")
    5. Yellow bearing shell ("medium")
    6. RHD vehicle  Blue bearing shell ("thick")
  2. Fit connecting rods.
    1. 2.1 The data matrix code marking -1-  must be facing the outlet side for all connecting rods.
    2. 2.2 Marking points -2-  must be on one side.
    3. 2.3 Screw in new connecting rod bolts and tighten according to specifications.

      Step 1: > Initial tightening 5 Nm (3.5 ftlb.) 

      Step 2: > Subsequent tightening torque 16 Nm (12 ftlb.) 

      Step 3: > Tightening torque 20 Nm (15 ftlb.) 

      Step 4: > Tightening angle 80° 

      Step 5: > Loosen screws - 360° 

      Step 6: > Initial tightening 5 Nm (3.5 ftlb.) 

      Step 7: > Subsequent tightening torque 16 Nm (12 ftlb.) 

      Step 8: > Tightening torque 20 Nm (15 ftlb.) 

      Step 9: > Final tightening angle 80° +/- 3°

    Connecting rod markings

  3. Assemble and fit new bearing shells for both crankcase halves on the crankshaft and crankcase half 1-2 according to the markings.
    1. 3.1 Coat bearing shells with new engine oil.
  4. Insert crankshaft into crankcase half.
