Information
The following tools are required for replacing the final drive bearing:
- > 9896 - Pressure pieces
- > VAS 6178 - Hydraulic cylinder
- > VAS 6179 - Foot Pump
- Optional: > VAS 6179/1 - Pressure Gauge with Connection Line
Information
The procedure for replacing the final drive bearings is described using the rear bearings as an example. The procedure for the front bearings is identical.
Check press-in direction -arrows- of the bearings! They are pressed out in the opposite direction.

- Press out bearing for final drive.

1 Nut 2 Pressure piece 9896-1 3 Sleeve 9896-2 4 > VAS 6178 - Hydraulic cylinder - 1.1 Centre the pressure piece 9896-1 on outer ring of bearing.
- 1.2 Centre the sleeve 9896-2 on the contact surface of the rear axle housing.
- 1.3 Press out bearing for final drive.

Pressing in bearing for final drive
1 Nut 2 Bridge 9896-3 3 Sleeve 9896-2 4 > VAS 6178 - Hydraulic cylinder - Bearing shown already pressed in - 3.1 Fit bridge 9896-3 on the rear axle housing in such a way that the feet of the bridge are flat on the rear axle housing.
- 3.2 Fit bearing for final drive at a centre position on the bearing seat.
- 3.3 Align bearing for final drive so that the small bulges are facing up/down.

- 3.4 Centre the sleeve 9896-2 (with the opening facing the hydraulic cylinder!) on the final drive bearing.
- 3.5 Press bearing for final drive in as far as it will go (sleeve 9896-2 is touching the contact surface on the rear axle housing).
