Installing rear wheel bearing housing
- Risk of crushing
- Risk of damage to components
→ Wear personal protective gear.
→ Do not raise the wheel suspension higher than the normal vehicle position (vehicle resting on wheels).
Information
- All screws and threaded joints on the axle must be tightened in vehicle position. Vehicle position means: vehicle standing on its wheels, or the wheel suspension is raised with a universal vehicle lift. Dimension -1-
, from lower edge of wing to center of axle corresponds to vehicle position. The current height can be found in → 4495TW ADJUSTMENT VALUES FOR SUSPENSION ALIGNMENT
. Always observe the following points!
Dimension 1 - center of wheel to lower edge of wing (rear axle shown)
- Screws and nuts are Geomet-coated and must not be greased .
- If the wheel bearing housing was replaced, perform the following tasks:
- 1.1. Clamp the wheel bearing housing in a vice with aluminum protective jaws.
- 1.2. Insert wheel bearing unit into the wheel bearing housing and tighten fastening screws.
Tightening sequence for wheel bearing unit
- 1.2.1. Always observe the specified tightening sequence -1 - 4-
!
Observe specified tightening torques:
Wheel bearing unit to wheel bearing housing: Initial tightening 80 Nm (59 ftlb.) Final tightening +90°
Information
- The speed sensor must be inserted using Optitemp (Optitemp LG2, 25-ml spray can available under Part No. 000.043.204.21) .
- The bore for mounting the speed sensor must be free of dirt .
- Observe correct tightening torques .
- 1.3. Insert speed sensor -2-
and tighten fastening screw -1-. Tightening torque 8 Nm (6 ftlb.)
Mounting for speed sensor
- 1.4. Position cover plate for brake disc -2-
and tighten fastening screws -1-
. Tightening torque 10 Nm (7.5 ftlb.)
Mounting for brake cover plate (shown installed as an example)
- 1.2.1. Always observe the specified tightening sequence -1 - 4-
!
- Installation is performed in reverse order.
Observe specified tightening torques:
Information
Tighten the threaded joint on the wheel bearing housing only at the fastening screw -1- . Counter at the nut -3- while doing so.
Mounting for trailing arm on wheel bearing housing
Lower trailing arm to wheel bearing housing: Initial tightening 120 Nm (89 ftlb.) Final tightening +360°
Shock absorber to wheel bearing housing: Initial tightening 150 Nm (111 ftlb.) Final tightening +180°
Tie rod to wheel bearing housing: Initial tightening 90 Nm (67 ftlb.) Final tightening +90°
Upper control arm to wheel bearing housing: Tightening torque 95 Nm (70 ftlb.)
Drive shaft to wheel hub (Step 1: Wheels suspended in mid-air, operate brake while tightening): Initial tightening 200 Nm (148 ftlb.)
Drive shaft to wheel hub (Step 2: Wheels on the ground): Final tightening 180°
