Rear Drive Axle And Differential: Overview
Vehicles without the active driveline system have a conventional mechanical rear differential. The rear differential has an integrated active on-demand coupling located on the driveshaft axis.
The rear differential operates in conjunction with the active on-demand coupling to provide controlled torque to the rear halfshafts. Torque is supplied to the active on-demand coupling and the rear differential from the Power Transfer Unit (PTU). For additional information, refer to: FOUR-WHEEL DRIVE SYSTEMS
The torque is controlled by the electro-hydraulic active on-demand coupling.
The full time intelligent system continuously varies the front and rear torque split to provide variable All Wheel Drive (AWD) torque when required.
The active on-demand coupling is mounted on the rear differential, between the rear differential and the driveshaft. The active on-demand coupling is a self-contained unit combining mechanical, hydraulic and electronic functions to distribute torque between the front and rear halfshafts with fully automatic control.
