Checking Position Of PASM Connector For Clearance

NOTE:

On vehicles with coil springs, the connector grommets or the PASM connector line can rub against the coil spring while driving and can be damaged as a result. To prevent this from happening, the clearance of the PASM connector must always be checked when the following prerequisites are met:

  • PASM connector was connected/loosened on the spring strut  .
  • The error message "PASM fault" appears in the instrument cluster  .
  1. Prepare for the test.
    1. 1.1. Raise the vehicle (vehicle springs must be completely relieved). → 4X00IN LIFTING THE VEHICLE
    2. 1.2. Centre the steering wheel.
  2. Check the distance between the PASM connector holder (long pin on U-shaped connector holder) and the coil spring mounting point -dimension x-  .

Checking distance between PASM connector holder and coil spring mounting point

    Distance OK  Length 66 mm  < x < Length 69 mm
    Distance not OK  x < Length 66 mm  or x > Length 69 mm
  3. Check clearance of connector grommet and PASM line with respect to the coil spring.
    G11983873

Checking clearance of connector grommet and PASM line with respect to coil spring

    1. 3.1. Place M10 drill bit -1-  on at least 2 windings of the coil spring -2-  .
Clearance OK  If the M10 drill bit -1- is not touching  the connector grommet -3-  and PASM line -4-  .
Clearance not OK  If the M10 drill bit -1-  is touching the connector grommet -3-  and PASM line -4-  .
  4. Further steps must be carried out, depending on the results of the check (see table below).
Distance of PASM connector holder Clearance of connector grommet and PASM line Action required
OK OK No further action required.
OK Not  OK Push PASM line up into the retaining clip. → 5.  If the clearance of the connector grommet and PASM line → 3.  is still not OK, the coil spring must be replaced. → 408537 DISASSEMBLING AND ASSEMBLING FRONT SPRING STRUT
Not  OK OK Bend back PASM connector holder → 6  .
Not  OK Not  OK Bend back PASM connector holder → 6  . If the clearance of the connector grommet and PASM line → 3.  is still not OK, push PASM line up into the retaining clip → 5  . If the clearance of the connector grommet and PASM line → 3.  is still not OK, the coil spring must be replaced. → 408537 DISASSEMBLING AND ASSEMBLING FRONT SPRING STRUT
  5. Push PASM line up into the retaining clip by dimension Length 12.5 mm +/-2.5 mm  .

    Bending back PASM connector holder

    1. 6.1. If the distance is -x-  < Length 66 mm  , bend the holder towards -A-  .
    2. 6.2. If the distance is -x-  > Length 69 mm  , bend the holder towards -B-  .
    3. 6.3. The distance must be between Length 66 mm  < -x-  < Length 69 mm.
