Installing Rear Spring Damper

Information 

Recommendation for workshops replacing shock absorbers/spring dampers:

  1. Place spring damper in installation position.
  2. Connect and lock electric plug connection for PASM -1-  on the spring damper -2-  .

  3. Fit spring damper -1-  on the body.

    1. 3.1 Tighten screws -2-  . >Tightening torque 50 Nm (36.9 ftlb.) 
  4. Tighten threaded joints in zero position.
    WARNING: Wheel bearing housing raised incorrectly 
    • Risk of crushing 
    • Risk of damage to components 

      → Wear personal protective gear.

      → Do not raise the wheel suspension higher than the normal vehicle position (vehicle resting on wheels).

    Information 

    Threaded joints must only be tightened in zero position to prevent warping in the bearings.

    1. 4.1 Lift the wheel bearing housing as far as required using >VAS 6931 - Transmission and Engine Jack  until the lower trailing arm is horizontal. >Zero position

      Information 

      • Loosen or fit nut on the trailing arm using the specified tools. 
    2. 4.2 Tighten threaded joint securing trailing arm to rear axle housing -2-  . >Initial tightening 70 Nm (52 ftlb.)  >Final tightening torque angle + 180°

    3. 4.3 Tighten eccentric threaded joint securing trailing arm to rear axle housing -1-  . >Tightening torque 160 Nm (118 ftlb.)

    4. 4.4 Tighten threaded joint -2-  for upper control arm. >Initial tightening 70 Nm (52 ftlb.)  > Final tightening torque angle + 90°

  5. Secure holder for level sensor -2-  to the trailing arm.

    1. 5.1 Tighten screw -1-  . >Initial tightening 3 Nm (2 ftlb.)  > Final tightening + 45°
