Disassembling Front Drive Shaft

Information 

Only the joint on the transmission side -3-  can be replaced on the front drive shaft. The joint on the wheel side -4-  is permanently connected to the drive shaft and cannot therefore be replaced. The bellows can be replaced on both sides after removing the joint on the transmission side.

Front drive shafts

1 Right drive shaft
2 Left drive shaft
3 Joint on transmission side (can be replaced)
4 Joint on wheel side (cannot be replaced)
  1. Clamp drive shaft in the vice (use aluminium protective jaws!).
  2. Remove hose clamp -1-  on the bellows on the wheel side and transmission side using a suitable tool.

  3. Pull housing of joint on the transmission side -1-  off the bellows -2-  .

  4. Remove outer circlip -1-  using suitable pliers.

  5. Remove remaining grease from joint on the transmission side and drive shaft.
    WARNING: Mechanical, hydraulic or pneumatic press 
    • Risk of squashing 

      → Read specific safety information for the press.

      → Check that the press is working perfectly before use, particularly the safety components.

  6. Press joint -2-  off the drive shaft in the workshop press.

    1. 6.1 Move bellows on the transmission side to the centre of the shaft.
      WARNING: Danger of objects or loads falling down 
      • Risk of squashing or crushing 

        → Secure components to prevent them from falling down.

    2. 6.2 Place a suitable aid (e.g. foam) under the workshop press as the drive shaft will fall to the floor after you press it off.

      Information 

      • > 9939 - Pressure piece must be raised with the groove facing upwards (with respect to the joint). 
      • > 9939 - Pressure piece must not be aligned with the 3 rollers of the joint! 
    3. 6.3 Position joint at a centre position on > 9939 - pressure piece-3-  .
    4. 6.4 Align a suitable mandrel -1-  for the workshop press at a centre position on the drive shaft.
    5. 6.5 Press off joint -2-  .
  7. Only relevant for vehicles of load group 1 (I-no. 0J2/0J3):  Remove inner circlip -1-  using suitable pliers.

  8. Remove bellows -1 and 2-  .

    1. 8.1 Pull bellows -1-  off the drive shaft -arrow-  .
    2. 8.2 Lubricate drive shaft in area -A-  with drive shaft grease.
    3. 8.3 Pull bellows -2-  off the drive shaft
    4. 8.4 Remove remaining grease from the joint on the wheel side.
