Install Lower Trailing Arm

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
CAUTION: Electrically moved components
  • Danger of limbs being trapped

→ Switch off electric power to drive motor.

→ Make sure it does not switch on again.

→ Check that there is no electric charge.

Information

The PDCC system can be active when the ignition is switched on (even when the vehicle is stationary). To avoid injury/crushing, only work near the anti-roll bar, lower trailing arm and bellows of the steering gear when the ignition is switched off and always allow for the run-on time of 60 seconds.

  1. Move lower trailing arm into installation position.
  2. Loosen lower trailing arm -1-  from wheel bearing housing.

Secure lower trailing arm to the wheel bearing housing.

    1. 2.1 Tighten nut -2-  > Tightening torque 130 Nm (96 ftlb.)
  3. Fit lower trailing arm -1-  on the front-axle carrier.

Mounting for lower trailing arm on front-axle carrier

    1. 3.1 Install -2-  threaded joints > Tightening torque 55 Nm (41 ftlb.)
    2. 3.2 Install -3-  threaded joints > Tightening torque 100 Nm (74 ftlb.)
    3. 3.3 Applies only to diesel:  Secure heat insulation -1-  with expansion rivets -2-  .

    4. 3.4 Turn the steering in fully so that the threaded joint -4-  is accessible.
      • Left trailing arm: Turn steering to the left.
      • Right trailing arm: Turn steering to the right.
    5. 3.5 Install bolts -4-  (do not tighten!).
  4. Fit spring strut on lower trailing arm -1-  .

Mounting for spring strut on lower trailing arm

    1. 4.1 Install bolts -2-  (do not tighten!). To do this, lift the wheel bearing housing up slightly with the help of a lifting device (e.g > VAS 6931 - engine and gearbox jack  ).
    2. 4.2 Remove protective tube (shop-made).
    3. 4.3 > VW552 - Spring compressor  must now be removed.
WARNING: Wheel bearing housing raised incorrectly
    • Risk of crushing
    • Risk of damage to components

      → Wear personal protective gear.

→ Do not raise the wheel suspension higher than the normal vehicle position (vehicle resting on wheels).

    Information

Threaded joints must only be tightened in zero position to prevent warping in the bearings.

  5. Tighten threaded joints in zero position.
    1. 5.1 Raise the wheel bearing housing as far as required using a jack (e.g > VAS 6931 - engine and gearbox jack  ) until the lower trailing arm is horizontal > Zero position (shown on rear axle as an example).
