Installing Trailing Arm

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
  1. Install threaded joint securing trailing arm to wheel bearing housing -1-  (do not tighten!).

    Mounting for trailing arm on wheel bearing housing

    Information 

    • Loosen or fit nut on the trailing arm using the specified tools. 
  2. Carefully press up the rear exhaust pipe -1-  using > VAS 6931 - transmission and engine jack-2-  and a wooden block -3-  in order to position the eccentric screw -4-  of the trailing arm.

  3. Fit nuts on the trailing arm using the tools shown.

    Arrangement of tools

    1 Cross handle, 3/8-inch
    2 Adapter, 3/8-inch to 1/2-inch
    3 Socket
  4. Install threaded joints securing trailing arm to rear axle housing (do not tighten!).

    1. 4.1 Install threaded joint -2-  .
    2. 4.2 Install eccentric threaded joint -1-  .
  5. Install threaded joint -1-  for trailing arm, shock absorber and connecting link (do not tighten!).

    WARNING: Wheel bearing housing raised incorrectly 
    • Risk of crushing 
    • Risk of damage to components 

      → Wear personal protective gear.

      → Do not raise the wheel suspension higher than the normal vehicle position (vehicle resting on wheels).

    Information 

    Threaded joints must only be tightened in zero position to prevent warping in the bearings.

  6. Tighten threaded joints in zero position.
    1. 6.1 Lift the wheel bearing housing using > VAS 6931 - transmission and engine jack  as far as required -Arrow-  until the lower trailing arm is horizontal > Zero position

    2. 6.2 Tighten threaded joint securing trailing arm to wheel bearing housing -1-  > Initial tightening 70 Nm (52 ftlb.)  > Final tightening torque angle + 180° 
    3. 6.3 Tighten threaded joint securing trailing arm to rear axle housing -2-  > Initial tightening 70 Nm (52 ftlb.)  > Final tightening torque angle + 180° 
    4. 6.4 Tighten eccentric threaded joint securing trailing arm to rear axle housing -1-.  > Tightening torque 160 Nm (118 ftlb.) 
    5. 6.5 Tighten threaded joint securing trailing arm, shock absorber and connecting link -1-.  > Initial tightening 70 Nm (51.6 ftlb.)  > Final tightening torque angle + 180° 
  7. Secure holder for level sensor -2-  to the trailing arm.

    1. 7.1 Tighten screw -1-  > Initial tightening 3 Nm (2 ftlb.)  > Final tightening + 45° 
  8. Install control arm spoiler -2-  .

    1. 8.1 Fit lug of control arm spoiler on the shock absorber threaded joint.
    2. 8.2 Tighten screw -1-  > Tightening torque 8 Nm (6 ftlb.)
