Disassembling Engine

  1. Secure the crankshaft.
    1. 1.1 Unscrew stoppers.
    2. 1.2 Turn engine to ignition TDC of cylinder 1.
    3. 1.3 Secure the crankshaft using > T40069 - locking pin  .

  2. Remove upper chain housing cover -1-  .
    1. 2.1 Unscrew screws -2-  and remove chain housing cover -1-  .

  3. Remove camshaft actuators.

    > 158420 REMOVING AND INSTALLING CAMSHAFT ACTUATORS (INCLUDES SETTING TIMING)

  4. Remove cylinder head cover.
    1. 4.1 Unscrew screws -24 to 1-  and remove cylinder head cover.

  5. Remove camshafts.
    1. 5.1 Unscrew screws -3-  and remove bearing cover -4-  and camshaft -1 and 2-  .

  6. Remove cylinder heads.
    1. 6.1 Unscrew screws -2 and 3-  and remove cylinder head.

  7. Remove crankcase cover at the front.

    > WM, 101419 REMOVING AND INSTALLING FRONT CRANKCASE COVER (V8 BITURBO) 

    1. 7.1 Unscrew screws -10 to 1-  and remove crankcase cover at the front.
    2. 7.2 Screw in three screws uniformly by half a turn each -Arrows-  .
    3. 7.3 Remove crankcase cover.

  8. Remove lower chain housing cover.
    1. 8.1 Unscrew screws -19 to 1-  and remove lower chain housing cover.

  9. Remove guide and tensioning rails.

  10. Remove intermediate shaft -1-  .
    1. 10.1 Lock bracing gear wheel -10-  using > T40362 - locking tool-9-  .
    2. 10.2 Unscrew screw -3-  on coolant pump drive gear wheel -2-  and screw -8-  on bracing gear wheel -10-  .
    3. 10.3 Remove coolant pump drive gear wheel -2-  and bracing gear wheel -10-  .
    4. 10.4 Unscrew screws -7 -  and remove cover -6-  with seal -5-  and axial bearing -4-  .
    5. 10.5 Guide out intermediate shaft -1-  .

  11. Remove piston and connecting rod.
    1. 11.1 For re-installation: Mark connecting rod and connecting-rod bearing cap with respect to each other and with respect to the cylinder.
    2. 11.2 Unscrew screws -2-  and remove connecting-rod bearing cap -1-  .
    3. 11.3 Push piston out of the crankcase using a wooden handle and remove it with your other hand.
    4. 11.4 Fit connecting-rod bearing cap hand-tight on the connecting rod and set it down on a clean surface after marking it according to the relevant cylinder.

  12. Remove crankshaft.
    1. 12.1 Unscrew > T40069 - locking pin  .
    2. 12.2 Remove bearing cover -1-  . Unscrew screws -2 and 3-  and pull off bearing cover -1-  using a puller.
    3. 12.3 Remove crankshaft with the help of another person and set it down on a clean surface.

  13. Clean the crankcase and sealing faces.
