Draining Coolant
WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
WARNING:
Hot fluid
- Danger of scalding
→ Avoid contact with hot fluid.
→ Wear personal protective gear.
Information
- Vacuum-fill cooling systems with thermal management (controlled thermostats or coolant valves for controlling engine temperature).
- The thermostat must not be activated or electric current must not be applied to the thermostat since this can cause irreparable damage to the thermocouple.
- Filling with a watering can only does not always guarantee a complete fill.
- Clamps on cooling system components should be examined carefully following refilling (check the coolant level while cold and top up several times as required).
- Clamps on cooling system components must also be vacuum-filled if significant amounts of coolant are drained. Drain at least two litres of coolant for vacuum-filling because otherwise a vacuum cannot be built up.
- Carefully open the coolant reservoir cap -1-
.
Opening cap on coolant reservoir
- Move service clip -2-
on the bleeder valve -3-
to a vertical position.
Service clip on bleeder valve
- Have a drip pan ready under the radiator.
- Loosen spring clamp -4-
and disconnect coolant hose -5-
on the radiator.
Coolant hose on radiator
- Disconnect coolant hoses for heating -1 and 2-
on the transmission.
- 5.1 Screw in adapter KS 65 from > VAS 6562 - Porsche Adapter Set for Cooling System Tester on the coolant reservoir.
- 5.2 Open clamp on the right coolant hose (return) -2- and pull off coolant hose. Collect emerging coolant.
- 5.3 Build up air pressure of max. 1 bar via the adapter using > V.A.G 1274B - Tester for Cooling System or compressed air hose and collect remaining coolant.
- 5.4 Release air pressure.
- 5.5 Re-fit coolant hose and secure with a spring band clamp.
- 5.6 Open clamp on the left coolant hose (supply) -1- and disconnect coolant hose. Collect emerging coolant.
- 5.7 Build up air pressure of max. 1 bar again and collect emerging coolant.
- 5.8 Release air pressure.
- 5.9 Re-fit coolant hose and secure with a spring band clamp.
Coolant hoses for heating
- If necessary, remove remaining coolant from the coolant reservoir by pulling off the coolant hose.
- 6.1 Open clamp -11- using > VAS 6890 - Spring Band Clamp Pliers and pull coolant hose -12- off the coolant reservoir.
- 6.2 Collect emerging coolant.

Information
- On vehicles with auxiliary heating, there are additional drain points.
- On vehicles with auxiliary heating: Disconnect coolant hoses.
- 7.1 Loosen clamps -6- , disconnect coolant hoses -7- and collect emerging coolant.
Coolant hoses for auxiliary heating
- Secure coolant hoses.
