Disassembling Engine

CAUTION: Heavy components 
  • Risk of squashing 

    → Wear personal protective gear.

    → Get someone to help if necessary.

WARNING: Danger of objects or loads falling down 
  • Risk of squashing or crushing 

    → Secure components to prevent them from falling down.

NOTE: Interchanged or dirty bucket tappets 
  • Scoring on cylinder head 

    → Since the bucket tappets have been run in the fitting bores, do not interchange them.

    → Absolute cleanliness is essential.

Information 

For many components, it is only necessary to partially disassemble the engine. The extent of disassembly depends on the damage and scope of repairs to be carried out.

  1. Have suitable stoppers ready for closing off the line connections.
  2. Mark vacuum hoses so that they cannot get mixed up.
  3. Remove turbocharger.

    V6 monoturbo: 

    → Removing and installing tank vent valve (V6 Monoturbo)

    V6 Biturbo:

  4. Remove high-pressure pump.

  5. Remove upper chain housing cover.

  6. Remove ignition coils.

  7. Remove spark plugs.

    →287020 REMOVING AND INSTALLING SPARK PLUGS

  8. Remove oil mist separator.

  9. Remove oil filter housing.

    V6 Monoturbo:

  10. Remove oil/water heat exchanger.

    →174019 REMOVING AND INSTALLING OIL COOLER (V6 TURBO)

  11. Remove piston spray nozzle control valve.

    →172519 REMOVING AND INSTALLING PISTON SPRAY NOZZLE CONTROL VALVE (V6 TURBO)

  12. Remove fuel collection pipe.

  13. Remove injector valves (injectors).

    →244019 REMOVING AND INSTALLING INJECTOR VALVE (INJECTOR)

  14. Remove solenoid hydraulic valves for valve lift adjustment.

  15. Remove tank vent valve.

    V6 Monoturbo: 

    → Removing and installing tank vent valve (V6 Monoturbo)

    V6 Biturbo: 

    → 202319 REMOVING AND INSTALLING TANK VENT VALVE (V6 BITURBO)

  16. Removing drive belt.

    → 137819 REMOVING AND INSTALLING DRIVE BELT (V6 TURBO)

  17. Remove the air-conditioning compressor.

    → WM, 873419 REMOVING AND INSTALLING AIR CONDITIONING COMPRESSOR

  18. Remove the generator.

    > 272219 REMOVING AND INSTALLING GENERATOR (V6 TURBO)

  19. Remove air-conditioning compressor support -5-  .
    1. 19.1 Remove tensioning roller -3-  .
      1. 19.1.1 Carefully lever off the dust cap -1-  with a suitable tool.
      2. 19.1.2 Unscrewing screw on tensioning roller -2-  .
      3. 19.1.3 Remove tensioning roller -3-  .
    2. 19.2 Unscrew the screws of the air-conditioning compressor support -4-  .
    3. 19.3 Remove air-conditioning compressor support -5-  .

  20. Remove the generator support -1-  .
    1. 20.1 Unscrew screws -2-  .
    2. 20.2 Remove generator support -1-  .

  21. Remove deflection roller -1-  .
    1. 21.1 Carefully lever off the dust cap -2-  with a suitable tool.
    2. 21.2 Unscrew screw on deflection roller -3-  .
    3. 21.3 Remove deflection roller -1-  .

  22. Remove crankshaft vibration damper.

  23. Removing flywheel

  24. Remove hall-sender rotor.

  25. Remove oil pressure control valve.

    → 172619 REMOVING AND INSTALLING OIL PRESSURE CONTROL VALVE (V6 TURBO)

  26. Remove intake distributor.

    → WM, 244619 REMOVING AND INSTALLING INTAKE-AIR DISTRIBUTOR (V6 TURBO)

  27. Only for vehicles with all-wheel drive:

    Remove final drive, four-wheel drive.

    → WM, 398819 REMOVING AND INSTALLING ALL-WHEEL FINAL DRIVE (V6)

  28. Remove shaft cover -1-  on both sides of the engine.
    1. 28.1 Unscrew screws on shaft cover -2-  .
    2. 28.2 Remove shaft cover -1-  .

  29. Remove pipe for drive shaft -1-  .
    1. 29.1 Remove O-ring -2-  on both sides of the engine.
    2. 29.2 Press pipe for drive shaft -1-  through from one side using a suitable tool and guide it out on the opposite side.

  30. Remove oil pan.

    → 175019 REMOVING AND INSTALLING OIL PAN (V6 TURBO)

  31. Removing oil guide housing.

  32. Remove oil pump.

  34. Remove lower chain housing cover.

  35. Remove crankcase cover.

  36. Remove coolant pump.

  37. Remove coolant regulator (thermostat insert).

  38. Remove the coolant switching valve -3-  .
    1. 38.1 Pull off vacuum hose -1-  .
    2. 38.2 Unscrew screws on coolant switching valve -2-  and pull coolant switching valve -3-  off the coolant pipe -4-  .

  39. Remove coolant flanges on left and right cylinder bank.
    1. 39.1 Unscrew screws -1 to 3-  .
    2. 39.2 Remove coolant flanges.

  40. Remove brake booster vacuum pump.

  41. Remove control chain.

  44. Remove both cylinder head covers.

  52. Remove knock sensor.
