Replacing Instrument Cluster

NOTE: Voltage drop 
  • Irreparable damage to control unit 
  • Damage to control unit 
  • Fault entries in the control unit 
  • Control unit programming/coding is aborted 
  • Malfunctions in the control unit, even during programming/coding 

    → Switch off ignition before disconnecting the control unit.

    → Make sure that the power supply is not interrupted during programming/coding.

    → Connect the battery charger with at least > current 90 A  to the vehicle battery.

Information 

The PIWIS Tester  instructions take precedence since the description may be different with later Tester releases.

The procedure described here has been structured in general terms. Different text or additional information may appear on the PIWIS Tester  .

  1. Document the total mileage and fuel level.
  2. Connect the Tester to the vehicle and start it. Switch on ignition.
  3. Place original remote control (hand-held transmitter) in emergency start tray.

  4. Select the vehicle type if required.
  5. Select the Instrument cluster  control unit in the overview  . Press F12 to continue. The message "Create Vehicle Analysis Log (VAL)?" appears. Press F11 to continue.
  6. Maintenance/repairs  must now be selected.
  7. Save tank sensor calibration values  must be selected. Press F12 to continue and then press F8 to start.
  8. Control unit replacement  must now be selected. Press F12 to continue.
  9. Read data  must be selected. Press F12 to continue and then press F8 to start.
  10. The Tester displays the message: Data was read out. Press F12 to continue.
  11. Switch off ignition. Replace instrument cluster.

  12. Switch on ignition. Select Write data  in the menu (procedure described above). Press F12 to continue and then press F8 to start. The data that was read out is loaded.
  13. The Tester displays the message: Data has been written. Press F12 to continue.
  14. In the overview  , press F7 to switch to the Additional menu  .

    The message "Create Vehicle Analysis Log (VAL)?" appears. Press F11 to continue.

  15. Component protection start-up  must now be selected. Follow instructions and procedure. Press F12 to continue.
  16. Enter the PPN user name and password  . Press F12 to continue.
  17. Allow the Tester  to run the procedure.
  18. Check the chassis number. Enter the order number. Press F12 to continue.
  19. Allow the Tester  to run the procedure. Press F12 to continue.
  20. The Component protection start-up  message appears. Press F12 to continue.

    Once the teaching process is completed successfully, the Tester displays the message:

    e.g. Gateway: Component protection taught

    e.g. PCM 4.0: Component protection taught

    and so on...

    Press F12 to continue.

  21. The message "Component protection start-up was successful" appears. Press F12 to continue.
  22. Maintenance of vehicle data  must now be selected. Press F12 to continue.
  23. Check vehicle data and make changes if necessary.

    The required vehicle data can be read out of the PIWIS vehicle information system.

  24. Go back to the overview. Press F12 to continue.
  25. Select the Instrument cluster  control unit in the overview. Press F12 to continue.
  26. Maintenance/repairs  must now be selected.
  27. Restore tank sensor calibration values  must be selected. Press F12 to continue.
  28. Read the information and warnings on the Tester. Press F12 to continue and then press F8 to start.
  29. The fuel-level sensor values are restored. Press F12 to continue.

    Information 

    The total mileage can only be written once in the instrument cluster. It cannot be changed even if the counter is below 1, 000 km (620 mls). An incorrect total mileage cannot be corrected.  Make sure that the total mileage is entered correctly.

  30. Set total mileage  must now be selected. Press F12 to continue.
  31. Read and follow the warnings displayed on the Tester. Press F12 to continue.
  32. Select the total mileage. Enter the value that was read out in Step 1 and press F8 to write data. Press F12 to continue.
  33. Write service interval  must now be selected. Press F12 to continue.
  34. Read and follow the warnings displayed on the Tester. Press F12 to continue.
  35. Follow the instructions on the Tester. Look up and enter the servicing values from the customer service booklet. Press F12 to continue.
  36. Coding/programming  must be selected.
  37. Automatic coding  must now be selected. Press F12 to continue.
  38. The Tester displays the message: Coding completed successfully. Press F12 to continue.
  39. Go back to the overview  . Start the Additional menu by pressing F7.
  40. Function enable  must be selected. Press F12 to continue.
  41. Enter the PPN user name and password  . Press F12 to continue.
  42. Display enabled functions  must be selected. Press F12 to continue.
  43. The enabled functions are displayed. Follow the instruction on the Tester.
  44. Restore enabled functions  must be selected. Press F12 to continue.
  45. Follow the instructions on the Tester. Press F12 to continue.
  46. The Tester displays the message: Restore successful. Press F12 to continue.
  47. Read out the fault memory  and erase it if necessary.
  48. Exit the diagnostic application. Switch off ignition. Disconnect the Tester from the vehicle.
  49. Check the function of the instrument cluster and fuel level gauge during the test drive.
